The cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation will beam in for an on-stage reunion during October’s New York Comic-Con. The main cast of TNG made their last appearance together in 2002’s disappointing Star Trek: Nemesis movie. But all that will change when the Enterprise crew reassembles for Star Trek: Picard season 3 on Paramount+.

TNG’s venerable Captain Jean-Luc Picard obviously has already made his return on the show that bears his name. But in addition to Patrick Stewart’s starring turn, Picard has also been graced by appearances from main TNG cast members Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis. Now Picard season 3 will make the reunion complete by also bringing in Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden and LeVar Burton.

But before the TNG crew reunites on the small-screen for Picard season 3, they’ll make an appearance together on-stage to celebrate their imminent return to the Star Trek universe. As revealed by TrekMovie.com, this live TNG reunion will happen during a Star Trek: Picard panel at New York Com-Con on Saturday, October 8. The actors will be joined on stage by Picard showrunner Terry Matalas, as well as executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Rod Roddenberry.

TNG fans naturally are excited to hear that the main cast of the classic show will be back together for Picard season 3. At the same time, given some of the issues fans have had with the first two Picard seasons, there might be reason for some trepidation. But showrunner Matalas recently spoke out to tamp down some of this potential fan apprehension, saying that he reached out to the various returning actors to get their input on what their TNG characters might be up to so many years after their stint on the Enterprise ended. Matalas’ pitch to Geordi La Forge actor Burton must have been particularly powerful, as the Picard showrunner says Burton became emotional when hearing what the show has in store for his character.

Picard season 3 overall is being billed as a proper send-off for the TNG cast, who were left somewhat in the lurch after the conclusion of 2002’s unsatisfying Nemesis movie. The very sight of all these classic Star Trek characters being reunited on-screen will surely be enough to get fans emotional. But it’s arguably not enough to simply stage a reunion and let Picard, Riker, Worf and the others take their final bows. What fans really crave is a strong, well-written story that allows the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast to really shine. These actors all had tremendous chemistry on the original show and in certain moments of the Next Generation movies, but it remains to be seen if that rapport can be re-established after so many years apart. Trek fans can be there as the cast gets reacquainted in person at New York Comic-Con in October.
