Jonathan Frakes teases his favorite scene of Star Trek: Picard season 2, which involves Riker, Q, and a fellow TNG alum. At long last, the second season of Paramount+’s hit live-action Star Trek series is just around the corner. After considerable hype thanks to the franchise return of Sir Patrick Stewart, Star Trek: Picard premiered back in early 2020. Season 2 was expected to arrive the following year, but a delay in production caused by the coronavirus pandemic pushed it back considerably. Currently, Star Trek: Picard season 2 is expected to premiere in February, though fans are still waiting on a specific date.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Following the game-changing twists of the Star Trek: Picard season 1 finale, the show’s sophomore run will find Jean-Luc and his crew facing a brand new challenge: Time travel. As the first trailer for Picard season 2 teased, the members of La Sirena will find themselves in an alternate, totalitarian universe that can only be fixed by traveling to the past. In fact, the new episodes were inspired by another Star Trek project that also dealt with time travel: The 1986 movie The Voyage Home. As for who is responsible for the Picard cast’s newest trial, fans don’t have to look much farther than The Next Generation‘s Q (John de Lancie), who returns to live-action Star Trek with season 2.

Just seeing de Lancie alongside Stewart once again will surely be exciting for longtime Star Trek fans, but Jean-Luc won’t be the only one who gets to share scenes with Q. Speaking to CinemaBlend recently, Jonathan Frakes confirmed he has a scene with de Lancie in Picard season 2. This means Will Riker will be back once again as well. Perhaps even more exciting is Frakes’ additional revelation that the scene includes Brent Spiner, albeit as his newer Star Trek character. Frakes said:

I have a scene with he and Soong, who Brent [Spiner] plays on Picard. And it’s one of my favorite scenes of the season.

Frakes previously appeared in Star Trek: Picard season 1, reprising his TNG role of Riker alongside Marina Sirtis. They were among the first members of the Next Generation cast to join Stewart on Picard, and there will surely be even more in the future. Stewart invited Whoopi Goldberg to appear in season 2, and LeVar Burton has shared his own hopes for a future cameo for Geordi La Forge. With Star Trek: Picard already renewed for a season 3, it seems likely there will be plenty more returns for familiar faces in the future.

As for season 2, TNG fans have a lot to look forward to. Frakes’ tease that his scene with de Lancie and Spiner is his favorite of the season automatically elicits intrigue. Considering how a vast portion of Star Trek: Picard season 2 appears to take place in either an alternate reality or the past, one has to wonder just where Riker and Q will cross paths. It should make for an interesting confrontation, and hopefully more details about what lies ahead will emerge soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
