The Star Wars franchise as a whole is built upon its many themes, those of good vs. evil, hope, family, and of course, friendship. The franchise is so rich with brilliant characters and a plethora of different relationships that some of the many great friendships have become iconic in the pop culture sphere.

Every era and set of films and TV shows have their own friendships that define that specific period in Star Wars history or those set of movies, and here we look at the ten very best friendships (on-screen) in the franchise. NOTE that romantic pairings do not qualify.

11 Honorable Mentions

There are too many great friendships in Star Wars, meaning honorable mentions are a must.

These include Han and Lando’s love/hate than a love relationship, Luke and Leia’s teased romance turned family relationship, Rey and Finn’s friendship that teased romance, Lando and L3-37 as well as Lobot, Chewbacca and Leia, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, Luke and Biggs, and a plethora of others.

10 Han Solo & Luke Skywalker

The two original male heroes of the Star Wars saga who started off a bit on the wrong foot before Han showing his true nature led to them becoming great fans.

Their friendship can pretty much get summed up by the times when they saved each other’s lives, showing how much they care for each other.

9 R2-D2 & Anakin Skywalker (& Luke Skywalker)

Most people cite the Luke and Artoo relationship as one of the best, and so it is, but there is not enough talk about Anakin’s relationship with the astromech.

When you look at The Clone Wars especially, you see the care the two have for each other, and both the trust and love that are between them. The same can be said about Artoo and Luke, too, making them pretty interchangeable relationships.

8 Finn & Poe Dameron

One of the first great relationships we see formed in the sequel trilogy is between Finn and Poe when they help each other escape the First Order.

From there, the two form an evident bond that culminates in them becoming Generals together in the Resistance. They spend a lot of time together, and both are very caring about the safety of the other. Even a relationship could have worked with the pair with such good chemistry and friendship between them.

7 The Clones

The clones undoubtedly deserve mention. It is hard to pick just a pair or group of clones, as they are all brothers, and while some are much closer than others, there are battalions of clones, all with their relationships.

Look at Cody and Rex, or Domino Squad, or Echo and Rex; basically, anyone in the 501st, the love, and comradery between them are admirable, and a significant factor in what helped them shape their individuality.

6 Poe Dameron & BB-8

Poe and BB-8 are the first friendship we see in the sequel trilogy, with them being in the opening sequence of The Force Awakens, and it quickly becomes clear how much they love each other.

BB-8’s reaction when he thinks Poe is dead is very sad, and the moment when the reunite is full of joy. They make clear how good of a duo they are, and how close they are multiple times throughout the trilogy.

5 The Ghost Crew

The main crew of Star Wars: Rebels is its own little family, and while pairings like Hera and Chopper, Zeb and Ezra, and any other combination could get on this list by their own merit, the entire crew is one.

There is a true family feel about the group, and you could feel how much it affected all of them when Kanan passed. Ezra, a former lothrat with no family brought into this crew, is the perfect example of how close and caring the group is with each other.

4 Obi-Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker

The top four on this list really could all be placed at number one, and Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship is definitely deserving of being at least next to the top spot.

Thanks again to The Clone Wars, the relationship of these two developed massively and grew into much more than it was in the prequels where it already was pretty great. As Obi-Wan said, they were brothers.

3 Ahsoka Tano & Captain Rex (& Anakin Skywalker)

Ahsoka and Rex, Ahsoka and Anakin, and Anakin and Rex are all standout relationships in The Clone Wars, and truly are the central focus of the show in terms of characters.

The love and care between the three of them and the possible pairings shine throughout the show, whether it be in Anakin’s heartbreak at Ahsoka leaving, or Ahsoka saving Rex from Order 66, it is hard to choose just one relationship of the three as standout friends.

2 R2-D2 & C-3PO

“You’ve been a great friend to me, R2. My best one, in fact.” a quote that will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and satisfaction to your soul with verbal confirmation how much these two love each other.

The bickering nature of the pair has always been a standout aspect of the movies, particularly the original trilogy, but despite the bickering fans always know how much they love each other and it is truly one of the saga’s greatest relationships.

1 Han Solo & Chewbacca

One need only look at Chewbacca’s reaction to Han’s death, and how protective Han was about Chewbaca’s safety to see how much the two loved each other and are truly the best friendship in Star Wars.

No matter what, they stick together. Whether it be smuggling, helping destroy the Death Star and save the Galaxy, or any number of things, they stick together and are as iconic as they are fantastic together as best friends.
