10 Hiding Luke On Tatooine

Sometimes it feels like not a lot of effort was put into hiding Luke from Darth Vader. He was placed on his father’s home planet of Tatooine and with his father’s stepbrother Owen Lars. They didn’t even change Luke’s last name.

It’s true that Obi-Wan watched over Luke from afar, and Vader didn’t know he had a son until after the events of A New Hope. As far as witness protection goes in a galaxy far, far away, it’s not very inspired work, though. Luke, Uncle Owen, and Aunt Beru are lucky that they remained off the Empire’s radar for as long as they did.

9 The Missing Hand

Rey extending the lightsaber to Luke at the end of The Force Awakens is an undeniably dramatic moment. That makes it all the funnier to consider this moment being undercut with Luke asking about his severed hand thirty years after losing it.

It’s a fair question considering the last time he saw this lightsaber, it was held in the hand that his father cut off. In reality, Luke proceeded to toss the lightsaber over his shoulder, but maybe he would’ve held onto it if Rey brought the hand with her as well.

8 The High Ground

Obi-Wan’s line about the high ground from Revenge of the Sith has taken on a life of its own and spawned a never-ending supply of memes. These memes are often used to show how Obi-Wan used the high ground to defeat Anakin, which makes this meme a perfect use of that reference.

Whether fans want to take this meme seriously or humorously, it works to think that Vader acknowledges the strength of Obi-Wan’s teachings when Luke uses the high ground to gain the upper hand against his father.

7 Raw Strength

Luke’s dramatic line refers to Ben Solo, but it’s much more amusing to think of it as a reference to one of the most bizarre and hilarious moments from Attack of the Clones. Poor C-3PO found his head removed and reattached to the body of a Separatist battle droid.

The battle droid programming caused the normally anxious and polite character to say, “Die Jedi dogs!” The fall of Ben Solo was actually traumatic for Luke, while this C-3PO moment is just absurd.

6 Luke’s Temptation

The evil Kermit meme translates remarkably well to the conflict between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Just as evil Kermit plays devil’s advocate and tempts regular Kermit, Darth Vader does the same for Luke.

Vader pushes Luke to his limits, bringing forth Luke’s hatred and anger and nearly swaying his son over to the dark side. Despite the undeniable temptations, Luke ultimately resists the pull to the dark side and solidifies himself as a true Jedi.

5 Thoughts And Prayers

The destruction of Alderaan further instilled Luke’s need to take action. He joined the Rebellion, destroyed the first Death Star, and became a Jedi.

This meme makes a political statement by showing that significant action needs to be taken in the wake of a tragedy. Sending thoughts and prayers and adding a temporary profile picture doesn’t accomplish anything. If Luke hadn’t chosen to take action after the destruction of Alderaan, many more lives would have been lost at the hands of the ruthless Empire.

4 Awkward Family Situation

The Skywalker saga is an incredible story and a compelling family drama. When written like this, though, it almost sounds ridiculous. It’s funny, but also shows that a good story is all in the execution.

Story decisions like this could come off as contrived or absurd, but they actually make sense and hold weight because of the way they were executed. It is undeniably awkward, but it’s also an epic family drama.

3 Lukewarm

The best memes often feature a delightful play on words. That’s exactly what this meme does as it plays on Luke’s name and the unfortunate time he sheltered inside a dead tauntaun on Hoth.

Tauntauns are suited for the colder climates of Hoth, but they don’t do well when the temperatures become deathly cold at night. Apparently lukewarm temperatures aren’t ideal either.

2 Pass On What You Have Learned

In the months leading up to the release of The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill shared this delightful picture with him “training” Daisy Ridley. The original picture was already humorous and only became funnier when juxtaposed with the image of Luke carrying Yoda on his back.

Many criticize the fact that Rey does not receive formal Jedi training as Luke did. A fair amount of that formal training is just Luke carrying Yoda on his back, though. For better or worse, Rey did not give Luke any piggyback rides in The Last Jedi.

1 Jedi In Exile

This meme does an excellent job of concisely explaining why The Last Jedi doesn’t betray the legacy of Luke Skywalker or the Jedi. The stories behind Obi-Wan and Yoda’s exiles are oversimplified here, but the essence is the same. Luke is far from the first accomplished Jedi, who went into self-imposed exile after making grievous mistakes. Obi-Wan and Yoda did the same thing, albeit for different reasons. Some of the greatest Jedi have made mistakes and gone to extreme measures in reaction.

What matters is not that they made mistakes and went into exile. What matters is that they learned from their mistakes and came out stronger because of it. Obi-Wan and Yoda passed down their invaluable teachings and provided the galaxy with a new hope by training Luke. Luke trained Rey and then made an incredible sacrifice to save his friends and provide the galaxy with a new spark of hope.
