Star Wars: 10 Cutest Creatures & Droids Introduced In The Sequel Trilogy

For over four decades, Star Wars has totally consumed the social consciousness of the movie-going public through its heart-filled stories, sweeping romances, and exciting adventures. The sequel trilogy of films The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker has been no exception to that rule, even if its storylines and characters have proven more divisive than some of the films that came before.

The world of Star Wars may be best remembered and most beloved for its human heroes and villains, but there’s no denying that the series has greatly altered the pop culture consciousness with its introduction of adorable creatures and droids. Here, we take a look back at the ten cutest creatures the sequel trilogy gave us.

10 Klaud

Oh, Klaud. We hardly knew anything about this incredibly large alien member of the Resistance going into the movie, and we didn’t exactly learn a lot of him from The Rise of Skywalker either. Klaud featured prominently in promotional materials leading up to the movie, but realistically appeared on screen for just a few moments, most notably on the early Millennium Falcon adventure.

Resembling a slug, Klaud has become one of the most meme’d Star Wars creatures of all time, which is even more impressive now, given how little of a role this ugly-cute beast wound up having.

9 BB-9E

Speaking of characters who were incredibly hyped up only to play a very small role, BB-9E was advertised as The Last Jedi‘s dark side counterpart to everyone’s favorite droid, BB-8. With an all black and grey color scheme, a darker beeping and booping register, and sinister First Order intentions, BB-9E was a character that deserved a lot more than he got.

Even though he only featured in brief scenes during Finn and Rose’s undercover attacks on the First Order, BB-9E still managed to be an adorable on screen presence, and maintains a dedicated following even now.

8 Orbak

Star Wars truly has something for everyone, even those who grew up as self-identified horse girls and boys. In The Rise of Skywalker, former Stormtrooper Jannah and her fellow defecting friends ride around on majestic beasts known as orbaks.

These creatures closely resemble our world’s horses, but with the addition of a truly lavish and beautiful mane that sweeps all across their body. These creatures don’t get much focus, but they share an adorable scene with droids BB-8 and D-O, and get to take part in a truly stunning battle along the surface of a Star Destroyer.

7 Maz Kanata

Few creatures in the Star Wars universe have been as knowledgeable, as resourceful, as adorable, and as outright hilarious as Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata. The sequel trilogy’s closest Yoda equivalent, Maz is a creature of unknown species who is easily recognized due to her orange skin and large goggles.

She features in each of the sequel trilogy’s three films in roles of varying size and importance, but she always provides valuable pieces of information and backstory for our heroes, whether it’s in her castle on Takodana or via hologram while settling a union dispute.

6 Fathier

Before The Rise of Skywalker introduced the horse-like Orbaks to the galaxy, The Last Jedi introduced the adorable horse-like beasts known as fathiers. Kept in captivity for racing on Canto Bight, these gentle giants are nearly ten feet tall in height, with floppy ears and almost puppy-like faces.

Despite enduring unspeakable abuse from their alleged caretakers on Canto Bight, the fathiers were always gentle and kind, especially to the children who worked in their stalls, and to Resistance operative Rose Tico, who played a vital role in their liberation.

5 Vulptex

Yet another adorable critter that The Last Jedi introduced is the creature known as the vulptex. Also referred to simply as crystal foxes, the vulptices were the fox-like creatures that resided on the salt-based planet known as Crait.

These creatures lived in large packs on the planet, with their crystalline coats blending in perfectly with the planet’s salty base and caverns. The vulptex was first encountered when the Resistance set up their last ditch attempts at a base on the planet, with many vulptices even rushing through the base to avoid the fallout of the Battle of Crait.

4 BB-8

The world of Star Wars is filled with droids of all kinds, but one of the most adorable, most loyal, and most beloved of them all is none other than the sequel trilogy’s main droid, BB-8. BB-8 is a unique astromech droid of the BB-series, whose striking orange and white coloring makes him truly one of a kind.

He played key roles in all of the sequel trilogy’s adventures, but arguably had the most importance in The Force Awakens when he found himself at the center of the galactic search for Luke Skywalker’s location. Though he may have originally belonged to Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, by the end of the trilogy, his allegiance is more clearly aligned with Rey.

3 D-O

BB-8 might be the most loyal and beloved of the series’ newest droid characters, but how can he possibly compare with his new pint-sized, neurotic companion, D-O? D-O once belonged to the fearsome Jedi hunter known as Ochi, but when he’s found by BB-8, he’s in a state of inactivity and disrepair, even covered in cobwebs.

After being reactivated, D-O speaks with a nervous, skittish stutter, and takes to BB-8 as though the larger droid were his own mother, in the way that a duckling imprints after being born. D-O doesn’t contribute much to the whole story, but he sure is one of the cutest droids the series has ever seen.

2 Babu Frik

Though he only has about two minutes of screentime in The Rise of Skywalker, no character from the film has taken the internet by storm in quite the way that the adorable black market droidsmith Babu Frik has. A pint-sized Anzellan, Babu Frik hailed from the planet of Kijimi, working alongside Spice Runners like Zorii Bliss.

Notable for his long whiskers, expressive wide eyes, broken speech, distinctive dialect, and hilarious laughter and exclamations, Babu Frik was truly a meme just waiting to happen. Hopefully, we’ll see more of him somewhere down the line. We’d even watch Babu Frik: A Star Wars Story.

1 Porgs

As cute as Babu and the droids may be, no single creature totally overtook the Star Wars galaxy and fandom quite in the way that The Last Jedi‘s porgs did. Inspired by the puffins that roamed freely among the filming locations, these inquisitive little birds often got up to trouble and found their way into spaces they didn’t belong.

They accompanied Rey during her formative training on Ahch-To, often popping up in the background of key scenes or investigating a lightsaber. After Rey wandered from Ahch-To, these little fluff balls went with her, causing trouble on the Millennium Falcon and, in particular, driving Chewbacca nuts with their tendency to chew through wires. But look at that face. Who could possibly resist?
