For over forty years, Star Wars has captured the imaginations of generations with its wonderful stories, larger-than-life characters, and expansive Galaxy, which holds in it so much detail and so much potential for exploration. Filled with star systems and various phenomena, the Galaxy in which Star Wars takes place is home to billions of beings of all nature of species.

The Skywalker saga and standalone movies showcase a lot of these alien species, but far from all of them. The TV shows and extended canon provide fans with even more than can be seen in the films, with all manner of rare and fascinating alien species and cultures.

10 Zillo Beast

The only semi-sentient species that will appear on the list, the Zillo Beast is a rare creature native to Malastare and is an absolute colossus, thought to be extinct until one was brought to the surface during the Battle of Malastare.

As seen in The Clone Wars, that particular beast was cloned by Chancellor Palpatine for scientific research due to its indestructible hide before getting killed for its rampage on Coruscant. They are untameable and wildly feared, but luckily very rare, having only properly appeared in The Clone Wars and Age Of Resistance – Kylo Ren 1 in the canon thus far.

9 Falleen

Appearing on screen through The Clone Wars and Rebels, the Falleen are a sentient-species prominent in Legends with the likes of Prince Xisor, but who still exist and have a history in canon.

Native to the planet of the same name, the Falleen were reptilian humanoids with green skin, long black hair, and distinctive skulls. The most notable examples of Falleen in canon are the nobles who headed the Black Sun before Maul’s arrival.

8 Moogan

Another green-skinned humanoid species are the Moogan, a species whose appearances in canon are limited to a couple of small appearances in the extended canon and a handful of Clone Wars episodes.

Native to the planet Mooga, the Moogan’s are known in canon for their tea, which poisoned students on Mandalore when smuggler Tee Va mixed it with poisonous agents to increase profits.

7 Zilkin

The Clone Wars has so many incredible arcs that have stuck in fan’s minds over the decade. Still, some are not necessarily of the highest quality that fans will always remember, with an example of that being Meebur Gascon and the droids arc.

Meebur Gascon was a colonel in the Galactic Republic Strategic Command and a Zilkin, a diminutive sentient species with an average height of around .33m. Thus far, the only appearances of the Zilkin in the canon have been in The Clone Wars, during the “Secret Weapons” droid arc.

6 Xidelphiad

The rarest species on this list is by far the Xidelphiad, a sentient species who only has one appearance in all of Star Wars canon, that being the book Star Wars Propaganda: A History Of Persuasive Art In The Galaxy.

The most notable aspect of a Xidelphiad, and pretty much all we know about them, is that throughout their lives, they change sex multiple times by encasing themselves in a chrysalis. The only known Xidelphiad was fine artist Sannab Ro who created a poster for the aforementioned book, this being for the Commission for a Safe and Secure Republic.

5 Kyuzo

Native to the Outer-Rim planet Phatrong, Kyuzo were a humanoid species who were not massively abundant in the Galaxy, with few notable Kyuzo in the franchise but a decent handful of appearances in the extended canon.

By far, the most famous of the Kyuzo in the canon is Embo, one of many great bounty hunters who appears in The Clone Wars. Kyuzo suffers from respiratory and visual issues in standard gravity conditions due to their native planet having such strong gravity, hence the masks seen on them when they appear.

4 Lasat

Another scarce species in the Galaxy is the Lasat, although they are far more well known than most on this list due to one of their species being a main character in Star Wars: Rebels, that being Garazeb Orellios, a.k.a Zeb.

The Lasat were native to Lira San in Wild Space but had relocated to Lasan before they were brought to the brink of extinction by the Empire. Luckily they survived and moved back to their proper home planet. There are few known Lasat, but Zeb and his family, as well as Jaro Topal from Jedi: Fallen Order, are all notable examples.

3 Zygerrian

A humanoid-feline species hailing from Zygerria who were once an extremely powerful species during the Old Republic, the Zygerrians sought to return to their former glory with slavery as their backbone, which was the crux of their main canon appearances.

They do not have much to do in the extended canon, except for a Clone Wars arc where they work with Count Dooku to aid the Separatists and try to build their slave empire again. They have a handful of cameos and small roles outside of this, but nothing of major note, and few distinctive characters outside of Miraj Scintel.

2 Bothan

The Bothans have been a phenomenon in the Star Wars franchise since 1983, when they were mentioned in Return Of The Jedi for their role in stealing the second Death Star’s plans. But despite that mention, they have never appeared in a film.

One step further than that, they have never appeared on-screen outside of a video game, only either getting mentions or appearing in printed content. They were known for their spy network, but other than that, canon information on them is scarce, having far more of a history in Legends.

1 Chiss

When you think Chiss, there is but one individual that comes to mind, one of the most beloved Star Wars characters to have never appeared in a film, or even in live-action to this point, Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Near-human and native to Csilla, the Chiss are a blue-skinned, red-eyed species with a rich culture situated in the Outer Rim. The Thrawn novels have done a great job at going in on the Chiss as a species, and this looks set to continue as more content with the interesting species, and its most notable member continues to get released.
