The Star Wars franchise has birthed such a vast array of iconography that is completely ingrained into the fabric of pop culture and has helped shape it for the past forty-plus years. There is perhaps no group more iconic than the Jedi. They have been around since 1977, and the lore surrounding them has been built upon ever since.

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm and so Star Wars, they got rid of the expanded universe. This change had many an effect, one of which was removing a lot of the information we had about various individuals and groups, including the Jedi. There is a lot of stuff out there regarding the Jedi, but there are still some gaps. Here are ten of the biggest unanswered questions we have about the Jedi.

10 WHEN WAS THE JEDI HIGH COUNCIL FORMED?

The Jedi High Council is the council of Jedi Masters that reside on Coruscant and are the governing body of the Jedi Order. They uphold peace and justice in the galaxy and, in the days of the republic, consisted of Jedi such as Yoda, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Jedi council has been around for generations, but when were they formed? And by which Jedi? They have been a governing body in the galaxy for so long and are so important it feels like there are official answers somewhere.

9 WHO WAS THE PREVIOUS MASTER OF THE ORDER?

Master of the Order is the title given to the elected leader of the High Council. Their appointment comes via a unanimous vote from the council, and at the time of the movies, the titleholder is Mace Windu, and then Yoda, when Mace Windu steps down to be more involved in the war.

They are the only known canon Master’s of the Order, though. The High Republic project will likely look at this, but some questions are surrounding it, such as who it was before Mace? Has it always been around? And, who some other holders of the title are?

8 WHAT ABOUT THE GRAND MASTER?

The title of Grand Master differs from Master of the Order. Master of the Order is an elected title given to the leader of the high council, while the Grand Master is the wisest and oldest Jedi and leader of the Jedi Order, a title held by Yoda.

Yoda has been old for a very long time. When the High Republic comes round, it will be interesting to see if he is still the Grand Master or a master at all. But, who was the first Grand Master? Who was it before Yoda? Was it even a legal title before Yoda, since there is no canon information on anyone holding it apart from him?

7 WHO WROTE THE JEDI CODE?

The Jedi Code governs the behavior of the Jedi Order, seen as a holy text, and reads, “There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.”

There is little information on the code. Not least of all missing from the data is who wrote the code, and when did the person write it? Again, this could be explored in the High Republic, but exact names, times, and details may be unlikely.

6 WHAT IS WITH JEDI TRAINING?

The Jedi Council almost rejected Anakin as he was too old, despite the fact he was only nine years old. Luke and Rey both started as young adults and were the most powerful Jedi of all time and an immensely powerful Jedi.

The rule is in place due to not allowing training to someone who could turn to the dark side, but when did this rule come around? Who initiated it? Was there something that prompted the rule to be? Also, how long does a Jedi need to train for, Luke and Rey trained for barely any time, but the younglings seem to train for years. While a Jedi is always learning, are there no official rules on the length, or is it up to the council and the padawan’s master?

5 WHY DID THEY NOT HAVE A SET WAY TO BECOME A MASTER?

The Jedi Council/Order is so chock full of rules and ancient codes and is almost a slave to tradition at points. There are the Jedi trials to go from Padawan to Jedi Knight, so why are there not set rules on becoming a master?

It can be done by successfully training a Padawan, or by taking a modified version of the trials, or by doing something exceptional. For an Order so obsessed with their ideologies, it seems strange there is no official process to become a master, that there are just unofficial options, left to the discretion of the current council.

4 HOW DID YODA KNOW ABOUT THE RULE OF TWO?

In The Phantom Menace, Yoda reveals to Mace Windu the “Rule of Two,” a sith ideology set in place by Darth Bane stating there can be no more than two Sith at the one time; a master and an apprentice. But how did he know about this rule?

He has lived for long enough; it can be assumed he was not the only Jedi to know about it. But, the rule was created after the presumed death of the Sith. So how did Yoda know about it?

3 WHO WAS THE PRIME JEDI?

Debuting canonically in The Last Jedi by way of the image above, and being elaborated on in The Last Jedi: Visual Dictionary, the Prime Jedi was the first Jedi.

The Prime Jedi founded the Jedi Order around ten thousand BBY. But who were they? How did they come up with the Jedi Order? These are intriguing questions, and the idea of Jedi origins have been around for a long time. Hopefully, more information regarding the mysterious inaugural Jedi comes at some point.

2 WHAT WERE THE JEDI DOING BEFORE THE MOVIES?

Compared to Legends, information, and stories with the Jedi before The Phantom Menace is pretty scarce. There is information regarding the Hundred-Year Darkness, and the Old Republic, but not a lot.

So, what were the Jedi doing, what was their role in the vast and expansive galaxy? The High Republic will fill in the time two hundred years before the movies, but what about before then? What about after that time? And until Project Luminous commences, what about during that time?

1 WHAT NEXT?

The Star Wars sequel trilogy was a bumpy ride with some fantastic, and some not so fantastic stuff. One thing that hurt the trilogy was the lack of a plan that left it very disjointed, and a lot of things unresolved. One such thing was the future of the Jedi.

Rey deemed herself a Skywalker, so what next? Does she reform the Jedi Order despite differing from their traditional ideologies? Does she fulfill the long time fan theory about reshaping the Jedi under the name Skywalker? The future needs explored at some point, and the Jedi or the lack of should be a big focal point.
