The upcoming Star Wars series Andor is reportedly set to release this August. The show, which serves as a prequel to 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will follow Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he leads the rising Rebellion’s intelligence efforts. The 12-episode series wrapped filming in August of 2021 and is expected to begin its production on season 2 in the fall of this year.

Andor will take place between the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. It’ll be the second live-action Star Wars series to do so, following the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The animated series, Star Wars Rebels, has also covered a small portion of this time period, with Andor taking place during some of the events of that show. Based on the events of Rogue One, it can be expected that the series will provide audiences with insight on Cassian’s early life, as well as the darker parts of the Rebellion operation. It’s been expected to release in Disney’s Q4, the fall of this year, which would follow up nicely to the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Now, reports from Bespin Bulletin (via The Direct) are saying that Andor could be coming earlier than expected. Reports were previously estimating the series to make its debut in September, but with the earlier-than-expected release of MCU’s Ms. Marvel being announced today, Andor will have a green light to also premiere sooner than expected. This report would line up with the start of production for season 2, as it would follow in the footsteps of The Mandalorian in working on its sophomore season while season 1 is rolling out. Since it doesn’t utilize the same Volume technology innovated for The MandalorianAndor will also be able to complete its production on its own time without conflicting with other series, which may set Disney+ on course to annually release the upcoming seasons of Andor each August.

An August release of Andor provides even greater insight on the release of other upcoming series as well. It provides a gap significant enough between the conclusion of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 to be released. It would also fill the time until the release of The Mandalorian season 3, which is reportedly releasing around Christmas time. This makes the August release of Andor seem even more likely, as a bridge between the two shows would keep viewers engaged excitedly during the wait for the highly anticipated third installment of The Mandalorian.

Andor, however, will likely be just as exciting with its ambitious dive into the intelligence affairs of the Rebellion. There’s potential for many familiar faces to cross over into the story, such as Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, and Saw Gerrera, as well as new faces, such as Adria Arjona’s character. With Cassian adopting the title “Fulcrum,” one previously established by Ahsoka Tano and used by several spies during the rise of the Rebellion, there’s even more potential for character crossovers, perhaps even one with the Force user herself. Viewers have only gotten a detailed glimpse at Rebellion intelligence during Rogue One as well as Star Wars Rebels, but Andor will be bringing it to a new level in the thrilling spy adventure that will likely come to audiences’ screens even sooner than expected.
