Star Wars Battlefront mod completely remasters the game’s graphics, adding ray tracing and 8K resolution textures, and more. The 2015 game was not as successful as EA had hoped, although its sequel Star Wars Battlefront 2 hit 19 million players at the start of 2021 following an Epic Games Store giveaway. The second installment introduced a campaign and new multiplayer elements that made it a more complete package in the eyes of fans and critics alike, but it was roundly criticized at release for its over-reliance on microtransactions.

While publisher EA held exclusive rights to create Star Wars video games following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, that is no longer the case. While the publisher is set to continue its relationship with Disney and work on future games, other developers are also free to work on titles based on the iconic sci-fi franchise and other Lucasfilm properties such as Indiana Jones. Since then, Ubisoft announced an open-world Star Wars game, which The Division studio Massive Entertainment is working on.

Popular modder AD Massicuro is creating a new Star Wars Battlefront mod pack, which adds ray tracing and upgrades the textures to 8K. AD Massicuro posted a new video to YouTube showing the enhancements in the Star Wars Battlefront “remaster,” and they say installing the mod introduces more realistic reflections, more detailed environments and models, and new particle effects and to the game. The end result is something that almost looks like an entirely new title altogether, eclipsing the product originally released back in 2015. The mod is currently not available, but Massicuro is planning to finish work on it in the near future and release it publicly.

While Star Wars Battlefront looks completely refreshed in the above video, Ubisoft is not the only other publisher currently working on Star Wars games. A next-generation remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in development for PlayStation consoles and PC at Aspyr Media. Revealed at the PlayStation Showcase 2021, the game is a full remake rather than a remaster and will add new features and visuals on top of additional content. Rumors suggest the game will use more action-orientated combat rather than the turn-based system used in the original, but it’s hard to imagine it will quite so action-focused as Battlefront.

Although Star Wars Battlefront is not that old of a game, it’s impressive to see how much technology has advanced in the last few years and what is possible in terms of improvements. Unfortunately, not many people will likely take advantage of the mod, as players have moved on to its sequel and other Star Wars games. For PC owners who love to push their hardware to the limits, though, AD Massicuro is hard at work on another marvelous tech showcase.
