Funko Pop! is releasing a new, combinable series of Star Wars figures inspired by the iconic Duel of the Fates sequence from The Phantom Menace, starting with Darth Maul. Long regarded by fans as one of the most memorable moments from the first film of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, the scene shows Maul squaring off in a lightsaber battle against Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn. The battle isn’t explicitly referred to as the “Duel of the Fates” in the film; rather, the scene takes its name from the piece John Williams composed for the sequence, also lauded as one of Star Wars’ best musical themes.

Duel of the Fates isn’t the first time Funko has created a series of Pop! figures inspired by a specific movie scene. The post-credits shawarma scene from The Avengers, for example, became a combinable Pop! series earlier this year. Over the course of several months, Funko released six pops total, one for every Avenger in the film, sitting at a table eating their shawarma. Lucky collectors who were able to snag all six were able to connect each piece like a puzzle to form one table, exactly as it’s depicted in the scene.

Funko’s new Dual of the Fates series looks to follow a similar concept. Launched as an Amazon exclusive, the first Pop! revealed in the series is Darth Maul, standing on a platform and posed like he’s ready to fight with his double-bladed lightsaber. The figure won’t be released until April 9, 2022, but fans can go ahead and pre-order it for $29.99. Funko also teased the forthcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn figures in an Instagram post, with Obi-Wan appearing to be situated at Maul’s left, hence the silhouette of the flailing Padawan braid, and Qui-Gon standing at Maul’s right.

Duel of the Fates is just another example of Funko stepping up its game yet again, catering to hardcore collectors who are looking for more than just their favorite characters posed in stoic stances. Pop! figures are becoming more detailed, more creative, and frankly, more expensive, but fans aren’t complaining, just shelling out more money to add to their collections.

That said, Funko collectors will need to act fast if they want to snag Maul and the other two figures when they release. These toys have a way of selling out quickly, and should they wind up getting sold somewhere else (i.e., a comic con vendor floor or eBay), expect prices well over $29.99. Nonetheless, fans are clearly loving the combinable figures, and if people keep buying them, that only gives Funko all the more reason to keep coming up with more.
