The long-awaited Star Wars High Republic project has been revealed, and it will be set 200 years before the prequel movies. The prequel films are largely regarded as among the weakest in the Skywalker saga. They starred Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, and Ewan McGregor and began releasing in the late ’90s. Like the original films and the new movies, the prequels make a trilogy. They followed a young Anakin Skywalker as he trained and eventually became Darth Vader.

Star Wars fans have been more focused on the prequels recently. This is because Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming Disney+ show. The new streaming service already saw massive success with The Mandalorian and is now looking to expand its Star Wars original series. They’ll also debut a show starring Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). Unfortunately, both shows are undergoing script rewrites before filming can begin.

After teasing Project Luminous for several months, Lucasfilm finally confirmed today that the project is set during the High Republic Era. This places it 200 years before the prequel films and the entirety of the Skywalker saga. It will also feature “Jedi Knights of the round table,” which should certainly paint a picture for Star Wars fans. As previously reported, the entire High Republic project will consist of several books and comics that all work together to tell one story. Lucasfilm has released novels before, which often confirm or enhance plot points from the movies.

The High Republic Era is a rich one in Star Wars history, largely because it hasn’t yet been explored on film. However, that may change following the release of Project Luminous. Rumors have suggested that Star Wars‘ next film saga may take place during The High Republic Era as well. However, for now, the massively successful film franchise is taking a break from the big screen. After wrapping up the Skywalker saga last December with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm is focusing on things like Project Luminous, and again, its Disney+ shows.

With how massive the sequel trilogy became, it’s nice to see Star Wars pivot to focusing on smaller stories and unexplored eras in its history. It will also give fans the chance to get to know new characters. This worked in the franchise’s favor in The Mandalorian, as viewers fell in love with its characters, especially Baby Yoda. As there are no Star Wars films this year, the time is perfect for the High Republic project. However, fans will have to wait until August to experience it for the first time.
