Chewbacca is a stalwart of the Star Wars franchise, but how old is the Wookiee in each movie? Although not one of the main three heroes of the original Star Wars trilogy – Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo – Chewbacca is right by their side throughout the three movies, which continues on its Disney’s sequels as well. Though the latter movies arguably overlooked him somewhat, Chewie is still a firm fan-favorite.

In chronological terms, Chewbacca made his debut in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, being among the Wookiees to fight in the Battle of Kashyyyk. Chewbacca then joined up with Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, forming the iconic partnership who would together pilot the Millennium Falcon and work together across four further Star Wars movies, even if he didn’t always get the credit (or medals) he deserved. Of course, being a Wookiee, Chewbacca doesn’t show his age quite so obviously as the human characters, but just how old he is has been revealed.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Solo: A Star Wars Story, it’s confirmed that Chewbacca is 190-years-old, which is expressed much to the shock of Han, who has to admit that Chewie “look[s] great!” That take place in the year 10BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), meaning Chewbacca was born in 200BBY. That in turn means when he’s fighting in the Battle of Kashyyyk in Revenge of the Sith, then, that the Wookiee is around 181-years-old, since that movie is set in 19BBY.

Heading to the original Star Wars trilogy, then in A New Hope, the events of which are ground zero for the galaxy’s calendar, Chewbacca would, of course, be 200-years-old. The Empire Strikes Back takes place roughly three years after that, making him 203, and then he’d be 204 in Return of the Jedi. Fast-forwarding to the sequel trilogy, and with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi both taking place in 34ABY, Chewbacca would be 234 in those movies, and then 235 in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which takes place a year later.

Chewbacca’s age may seem considerable compared to the humans he spends most of his time with, but it’s not all that remarkable for a Wookiee. The species has an average lifespan of around 400 years, meaning Chewie still has another couple of centuries in him after The Rise of Skywalker. There’s a hidden sadness in that, though: he’s already out-lived his three closest Star Warscompanions in Han, Leia, and Luke, and it’s likely he will do so with his newfound friends as well. Similarly, not a lot is known about Chewbacca’s life before the prequels, but it could be that he lived relatively peacefully for almost 200 years, before suddenly being thrust into numerous wars in middle age – so hopefully in his later years he can finally hang up the bowcaster for good.
