With the recent release of the new Dune trailer, there has been a renewed interest in Sandworms and other strange alien creatures, and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy has the perfect solution. Since No Man’s Sky never came through on that particular expectation, and Star Citizen’s release seems to get further and further away with every waking moment, players have to look elsewhere for their Sandworm fix.

Fortunately, there is a game that features a near perfect experience with a slithering demon that stalks its prey relentlessly. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is not only a great Star Wars game in its own right, but also features a terrifying level that involves hiding from one of science fiction’s scariest creatures.

Players who have imagined carefully navigating their way across the surface of a desolate planet, only to be pursued by a serpentine subterranean akin to those found on the titular Dune will find this level in particular to be a lot of fun. Here’s why Star Wars: Jedi Academy has the best Sandworm in gaming.

What Are The Sandworms in Dune?

Sandworms are found on the desert planet Arrakis. They are the size of skyscrapers and seem to be nothing but mindless monsters that consume all who they come across. Primarily, explorers of the planet come in contact with the worms when they attempt to harvest the resource Melange, otherwise known as “The Spice.” The worms guard the areas where the resource can be collected and don’t take kindly to anyone attempting to make off with this precious substance.

In the mission “Merchant Rescue” players must respond to an urgent rescue transmission that came from the planet Blenjeel. What is supposed to be a routine rescue mission as an early warm up for students at the Academy quickly turns into a fight for survival. Shortly after landing, it is discovered that this planet is infested with giant worms that dig their way through the earth, consuming anything that makes vibrations on the surface of the sand.

In order to make it through this mission alive, players will need to jump from platform to platform in order to avoid touching the ground. The issue here is that there are a few of these structures that get sucked into the ground after the player lands on them, forcing players to choose their paths wisely the first time. Backtracking isn’t impossible, but if the player must go back to an old location, it is advised that they use the Jedi Speed ability to get across the ground faster than usual.

This whole mission is about not getting swallowed up by the creature as the player works their way through the mission to save the day. This is truly the closest thing to a quality Dune video game experience that is available at this time, at least until Funcom’s upcoming multiplayer Dune title is released. Until then, players can enjoy their spice-hunting adventures in Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.
