The Jedi Masters of Star Wars and Demon Slayer‘s Hashira are alike in many ways. Both stand as the “tip of the spear” for their respective groups. As such, each represents an elite fighting force composed of the most experienced, most skilled, most capable members who have dedicated their lives to the cause. Additionally, the weapon of choice for most members of the two groups is the sword. While the reality is, that the Jedi and Hashira would most likely be allies, if threatened either group would not hesitate to do what is necessary to ensure the mission of their groups is maintained. If this scenario came to pass, which group would be victorious?

Naturally, since both rely on swords or blades to fight, the better sword-fighters would have a distinct advantage. For the Jedi, while there was some degree of personalization that a Master is expected to integrate into his sword-fighting techniques, generally, most Jedi Masters use some derivation of the seven Jedi lightsaber forms. Each form has a strength and weakness. For instance, while Form III is excellent at defending against blaster fire, it does not provide a wielder with much in attack prowess. Nevertheless, if an opponent understands the seven forms, they will also understand the Jedi Master’s sword fighting style.

For the Hashira, personalization is the rule in their fighting styles. Accordingly, unless the opponent has fought a Hashira many times, they are unlikely to know how they will proceed in a fight. While there are several common sword-fighting styles, such as the Water Breathing Style that is commonly taught and used by non-Hashira Demon Slayers, a Hashira is expected to either amend and change a common style to suit their individual physical and mental attributes, or develop a completely new sword-fighting style that is unique to them. For instance, to make up for her lack of strength, Shinubo Kocho creates the Insect Breathing Style. The style, which mimics the actions of an insect, focuses on speed and asymmetric movements to confuse an opponent until they are vulnerable to an attack.

Another key similarity between a Jedi Master and a Hashira that would play an important role in a fight between the groups, is their competence at using the unique abilities that set them apart from other beings. For the Jedi Master, this would be the Force; and for the Hashira, it would be the Breathing Techniques. In both cases, the Jedi Master and the Hashira are particularly adept at using these unique abilities thereby giving them a substantial formidability in battle.

Regarding the Jedi, not only does superior Force manipulation boost their melee abilities, but it also allows them to incorporate a range of non-sword actions into their fighting. For instance, while engaging an opponent with a lightsaber, a Jedi Master could expose them to two simultaneous attacks with a Force push. Conversely, while the Hashira Breathing Techniques are essential for them to unlock the full potential of their sword-fighting techniques, as well as experienced upgrades in strength, stamina, and quickness, it does not give the Hashira the ability to control other objects or bring other off-point attacks into the equation.

So, who wins? Just in terms of sword-fighting, the advantage goes to Demon Slayer‘s Hashira. Crafting a fighting style unique to one’s personal circumstances is not something a Jedi Master is likely to have encountered before. While they would be able to develop a counter-attack if given time, the speed of the Hashira will make those adjustments difficult. However, even with the Hashira’s sword-fighting advantage, the ultimate winner would be Star Wars’ Jedi Masters. The key difference is the benefit that the Force gives to the Jedi Master. It not only gives the Jedi Master the ability to counter the Hashira’s strikes but also opens them up to multiple vectors of attack and therefore gives the Jedi Master more opportunities to succeed.
