The Loth-Wolves played a key role in Star Wars Rebels – and here’s how their powers work. Across the galaxy, there are a handful of planets referred to by the Jedi as “vergences in the Force.” As described in the Star Wars sourcebook Forces and Destiny, each of us these worlds is a nexus of power. “The Force flows strongly on these worlds, invigorating and uplifting those with the skill to sense it.

Lothal, the planet that played such a significant role in Star Wars Rebels, is one such vergence in the Force. Millennia ago, the early Jedi discovered the center of this vergence and built a Jedi Temple there to protect it. This temple proved the key to accessing the World Between the Worlds, a realm from which a Force-user could access all of time and space. It is little wonder, then, that the animal life on Lothal has evolved to possess a unique connection to the Force.

The Loth-Wolves are the most remarkable example of all, creatures who are clearly bonded to the vergence of the Force that is Lothal. Lucasfilm has recently published The Star Wars Book, by Pablo Hidalgo, Cole Horton, and Dan Zehr, and it gives a fascinating summary of the Loth-Wolves’ abilities:

“A select few creatures in the galaxy have Force powers that give them a mythic quality. One such animal is the Loth-wolf, a creature of legend, previously known only in ancient cave paintings.

While everything organic is connected to the Force, Loth-wolves act with purpose, guarding the light side of the Force on Lothal. These majestic creatures are able to speak basic but rarely opt to do so. Loth-wolves have remarkable Force-powers and are able to mystically traverse great distances on their homeworld. Promising Jedi trainee Ezra Bridger is able to form a strong bond with the Loth-wolves, who aid him against the Empire.”

Ezra grew up on Lothal, and as such he has a strong and profound bond with the Force on his homeworld, explaining why he is also able to connect so strongly to the Loth-Wolves. Curiously, though, it’s possible the link between Jedi and Loth-Wolves goes even deeper than this; after Kanan’s death, Ezra was introduced to a Loth-Wolf named “Dume,” who was described as “a Force manifestation of Kanan Jarrus’ will after his death.” This raises the possibility all the Loth-Wolves are essentially the spirits of Jedi who lived and died on Lothal in the past, explaining why they slunk into the shadows when the dark side was dominant in the galaxy. The Loth-Wolves played a key role in the liberation of Lothal, and it would be so very appropriate for that to have been accomplished by the spirits of past Jedi.

It’s unlikely the Loth-Wolves will ever appear again in Star Wars. Whatever their true origin may be, they are only active on Lothal, and that planet’s story was brought to an end in Star Wars Rebels season 4.
