There won’t be any Star Wars Rebels season 5 according to series creator Dave Filoni. Familiar faces such as Princess Leia, Mon Mothma, Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader all appeared in the Star Wars animated series throughout its run, but the show’s main sell was always its primary cast of new key players. Set several years before the Rebellion made their presence known in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the Ghost Crew composed of Hera, Kanan, Sabine, Zeb, Chopper and Ezra only operated locally in Lothal and its nearby planets. Nevertheless, fans were invested in their collective and individual stories.

In 2018, Star Wars Rebels bowed out after four great seasons. The Ghost Crew successfully protected Lothal against the Empire led by Grand Admiral Thrawn. The series’ ending, however, left some questions hanging, which included the unknown whereabouts of Ezra Bridger who disappeared with the villain to ensure that he won’t be able to wreak any more havoc on his home planet. After a significant time jump on the heels of the Empire’s defeat in Return of the Jedi, Ahsoka and Sabine went on a mission to locate the missing Jedi. Amidst the narrative opportunity presented, Filoni says he has no plans for a Star Wars Rebels season 5.

Speaking with Deadline in light of Star Wars: The Clone Wars ending, Filoni was asked about the possibility of a Star Wars Rebels season 5. The series creator didn’t mince words, and said that he doesn’t have any intention of releasing another outing for the Disney XD animated show. He explained it told the complete story he intended, so there’s really no reason for an extra year.

No. Not really. I was really happy with how that series turned out, and I feel like we got to tell a complete story there. It was one of the things that really drove me to thinking, well, it would be great to have a complete feeling like that for Clone Wars, so now to have both is really great. I think that there’s always potential for stories that involve the characters from Rebels, which is maybe a better way to put it. They’ve all earned their place in the galaxy, so to speak, so I’m sure there’s some more of them to do.

While Filoni effectively shot down any chances of Star Wars Rebels season 5, that doesn’t mean fans won’t see any of the remaining characters from the series in other projects. For starters, Ahsoka Tano is already reportedly confirmed for an appearance in The Mandalorian season 2and since the Disney+ series is set years after Return of the Jedi, it can shed a light on what happened to their search efforts for Ezra. At this point, there’s no word yet if either Sabine or Ezra are also involved in the Pedro Pascal-led show. Regardless, Ahsoka’s reemergence could provide fans with some answers regarding the lingering questions from Star Wars Rebels. Perhaps, this might even be a springboard for a spinoff show for her or any of the surviving characters from the animated project.

Star Wars Rebels did leave some unresolved plot lines, but Filoni is right, there’s no need for a season 5. The show wrapped up the Ghost Crew’s collective adventures. They went their separate ways after the Rebellion’s win against the evil Empire. The way the show left things, future stories featuring any of the characters should be in the form of an off-shoot – whether that revolves around Sabine and Ahsoka looking for Ezra or Hera raising her and Kanan’s son, Jacen. In any case, fans will be thrilled in any capacity they see members of the Ghost Crew again on the screen in Star Wars Rebels.
