Although romance wasn’t the main focus of the stories told throughout the Star Wars universe, there were many relationships that endured through all of the galactic chaos. While couples like Anakin and Padmé were doomed from the beginning, there were longer-lasting pairs that were more hopeful.

With the many romances throughout the galaxy came truly genuine connections, offering many parallels to that of Taylor Swift’s epic storytelling that is woven into her songs. Whether the relationships were complex and oftentimes tragic, or heartwarming and fun, Swift has a song that fits each couple perfectly.

Poe & Zorii – “When We Were Happy” (Taylor’s Version)

“We used to walk along the streets / When the porch lights were shining bright / Before I had somewhere to be / Back when we had all night and we were happy.”

Introduced in The Rise of Skywalker, Poe and Zorii’s romance was hinted at as a relationship that had run its course a long time ago, with a slightly bitter ending. However, once the two got over their initial discomfort at seeing each other again, it was clear that once upon a time, they had been happy together.

Swift walks the path of memory in this song, as she relives the good times she had with a partner before everything went awry. As Poe and Zorii’s romance ended because Poe left to join the New Republic, the lyrics in this song are fitting, however nostalgic they may be.

Cassian & Jyn – “Long Live”

“Long live all the mountains we moved / I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you / I was screaming ‘long live the look on your face / And bring on all the pretenders / One day, we will be remembered.'”

The conclusion to Cassian and Jyn’s story ranks among the most heartbreaking deaths in Star Wars. Their final moments were full of a bittersweet hopefulness and whilst not explored, it’s an encouraging notion to think that there may have been a blossoming love between the two.

They bravely fought against the Empire at the cost of their lives at the end of Rogue One, but as Swift’s lyrics suggest, their memories will surely live on. The song describes a legacy that was built on endurance and a worthy cause to fight for, and as their mission enabled the eventual destruction of the Death Star, fits poignantly with Cassian and Jyn’s relationship.

Han & Qi’ra – “Cowboy Like Me”

“You’re a bandit like me / Eyes full of stars / Hustling for the good life / Never thought I’d meet you here / It could be love / We could be the way forward / And I know I’ll pay for it.”

Although Han’s epic romance would come later on in the Star Wars timeline, his and Qi’ra’s relationship in Solo was still a fun relationship to see play out. As the two of them had grown up together, they shared many of the same traits and had an exciting dynamic to watch.

The narrative of Swift’s song details a relationship born between two con artists of sorts, who connect in unlikely circumstances and know that they might not last, reminiscent of Han and Qi’ra’s brief romance. The comparisons are plentiful, especially considering Han and Qi’ra’s respective trades, and their reunion in the film was definitely unexpected.

Finn & Rose – “It’s Nice To Have A Friend”

“You’ve been stressed out lately? Yeah, me too / Something gave you the nerve / To touch my hand / It’s nice to have a friend.”

Finn and Rose had a rocky start to their relationship in The Last Jedi but ultimately bonded well, and shared a tender moment in the form of a kiss at the end of the film. While their romance wasn’t indicated to have gone any further, their personalities were very complimentary.

Swift writes of a romantic friendship in this song, which fits well with the dynamic shared between Finn and Rose. Through all of the chaos of their battle against the First Order, Finn and Rose found each other and helped inspire each other to constantly do the right thing, and they shared a genuinely heartwarming connection.

Kanan & Hera – “I Know Places”

“Just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it / My love / They are the hunters, we are the foxes / And we run / Baby, I know places we won’t be found.”

Introduced in Rebels, Hera and Kanan had one of the most authentic relationships in the Star Wars universe, that was built on years of trust and friendship. Although their relationship ended in the tragedy of Kanan’s death, they had many years together prior, where the hints of their romance flourished.

Like Swift’s song suggests, Kanan and Hera were usually on the run from the Empire as they swept across the galaxy in their bids to help others. However chaotic their circumstance, the two were always able to ground each other, and had a truly sweet connection that endured long after Kanan’s heroic sacrifice.

Obi & Satine – “Dancing With Our Hands Tied”

“I’d kiss you as the lights went out / Swaying as the room burns down / I’d hold you as the water rushes in / If I could dance with you again.”

Despite his allegiance to the Jedi Order and its strict code, Obi-Wan shared a fleeting relationship with Satine, the ruler of the planet Mandalore. Their romance was shown in The Clone Wars, and usually showed the pair trying to deny their feelings for each other due to their individual stances.

In true Star Wars fashion, Obi and Satine’s romance had a bitter ending as she tragically died in his arms, but not before Obi finally admitted that he would have left the Jedi Order for her. Like Swift’s song, the two had a whirlwind romance that, although forbidden, carried genuine love that they couldn’t ignore and wished to have back.

Finn & Poe – “The 1”

“You know the greatest films of all time were never made / And I guess you never know, never know.”

Whilst a romance between the two was never actually explicitly confirmed throughout the sequel trilogy, it’s still debated that Finn and Poe should have been a canon couple. Whenever they interacted, they had clear chemistry and brought out the best in each other.

Hence, Swift’s song where she wonders what would have happened had one thing been different, and a relationship pursued turned out to be everything she dreamed of, echoes the relationship between Finn and Poe perfectly. Fans may never know if Finn and Poe were romantically linked, but that doesn’t mean they can’t dream that they were “the one” for each other.

Rey & Kylo/Ben – “Willow”

“You know that my train could take you home / Everywhere else is hollow / I’m begging for you take my hand / Wreck my plans / That’s my man.”

Like many other couples in Star Wars, Ben and Rey had an ill-fated relationship, mostly because their romance first began when they were on opposite sides of the war. Swift’s song fits their romance wells, as she writes of someone begging the person they love to just come back to them, no matter the cost.

The lyrics are reminiscent of one of the best Rey and Kylo scenes, whereby Kylo begged Rey to take his hand and join the First Order, but all Rey wanted was to bring Kylo back to the light. However tragic their ending was, the two shared an undeniable attachment (amplified by their dyad connection) that was dynamic to watch and gave both of their characters someone to turn to.

Anakin & Padmé – “Sad Beautiful Tragic” (Taylor’s Version)

“And you’ve got your demons / And darlin’ they all look like me / ‘Cause we had a beautiful magic love there / What a sad beautiful tragic love affair.”

Anakin and Padmé’s romance was doomed from the beginning, but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t genuine love between the two, especially considering that Anakin’s fall to the dark side was bound up in his love for Padmé. Despite the tragedy of their circumstances, their relationship was a beautiful one, shown in both the films and The Clone Wars.

In this song, Swift looks back on a failed romance with a sad yearning for what once was, and the sentiment fits with the calamity of Anakin and Padmé’s relationship, most notably how they ended. However, through all of the tragedy, there was a beauty to be seen in the love that they shared, even if it wasn’t built to last.

Han & Leia – “Peace”

“Give you my wild, give you a child / Give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other / Family that I chose, now that I see your brother as my brother / Is it enough?”

Han and Leia were just one of those couples in Star Wars that made sense. From fighting alongside each other in the days of the Empire, to inspiring a new wave of Resistance fighters, they never had a quiet or peaceful life, which was especially true after they lost Ben to the dark side.

Swift’s song details the worries of a person who cannot ever give their partner peace, as they wonder if that would ever be enough. Her lyrics align accurately with Han and Leia’s romance over the years, and represent a love that weathers many a storm, but will ultimately always remain no matter what tragedies may occur, just like Han and Leia.
