The latest Star Wars comic miniseries has yet to reveal why Ty Yorrick left the Jedi Order to become a monster hunter during the High Republic era, but the consequences of her leaving just played out in tragic fashion when Ty fails to save the life of a young girl who attacked her. The one-time Padawan suffers the consequences of ending her training in the latest issue of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – The Monster of Temple Peak.

The ailments afflicting the unfortunate girl before her untimely death only serve to further shame Ty in how the incident transpires. Named Pela, Ty’s assailant stops being of sound mind when the fumes of a Rhydon beast damage her vocal cords, rendering her mute. Pela incidentally attacked Ty earlier on when the former Jedi Padawan first stepped foot on Loreth to rid the Moof-Rancher colony of its Gretalax problem. Pela later resumes her assault on Ty again in the middle of the night, a scuffle that leads to Pela falling off a cliff in Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – The Monster of Temple Peak #2 by writer Cavan Scott and artist Rachael Stott.

Not wanting Pela to die, Ty calls on the Force to stop her fall. This proves successful as the girl’s descent immediately stops, but when the monster hunter attempts to use the Force again to lift Pela towards her outstretched hand, she begins to struggle. And when an image of Ty’s former Padawan friend suddenly materializes in her mind, Ty loses focus, causing her to relinquish her hold on the Force and Pela to fall to her doom. It’s unclear whether Ty would have successfully grabbed hold of Pela had the image of her Padawan friend Klias not popped into her head.

What makes the unpleasant situation all the more tragic is that Ty’s exit from the Jedi Order (and her subsequent rejection of the Force) seems to have been the result of the aforementioned Klias, who obviously had a negative influence on her. In her flashbacks, Klias is leading a less than enthusiastic Ty into trouble by essentially raiding a so-called Yallow Shrine without permission from their superiors to help the Jedi understand how the dark side works and seduces people. Knowing of both the many potential downsides of getting involved in the dark side and Ty’s eventual expulsion from the Jedi Order, it’s clear that the incident didn’t end well and most likely was the main contributing factor to Ty leaving. If it hadn’t been for Klias’ meddling and Ty’s inability to stand up to him, she may have most likely become a Jedi Knight and been able to prevent people like Pela from dying.

What Ty experiences and tries to harness are techniques that Padawans learn at a young age. In fact, Yoda attempts teaching them to Luke Skywalker during the young Jedi’s time on Dagobah. Luke can’t use the Force to lift his X-Wing out of the swamp, just like how Ty can’t keep Pela from falling. He also can’t concentrate when images of the future penetrate his mind, causing the rocks he was keeping afloat and Yoda to fall to the ground. This is much like how Klias’ face severs Ty’s connection with the Force. Luckily, Luke isn’t in a life or death situation like Ty is. But he does prematurely run off to face Vader before completing training much like how Ty Yorrick left the Jedi Order before she became a Jedi Knight. Both examples reveal why it’s crucial for Padawans to complete their Jedi training in Star Wars, as it could very much mean life or death.
