Warning! SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett episode 7.

Star Wars gives Chewbacca some justice in The Book of Boba Fett finale, and it all comes down to a joke with Black Krrsantan. The Pykes finally attack Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and his troops in The Book of Boba Fett finale. Initially, Boba Fett seems utterly outmatched. The Pykes surprise the ex-bounty hunter by using Tatooine locals to ambush his people. They also roll out two Scorpenek Droids to overpower Boba Fett. However, the former bounty hunter wins in the end. Thanks to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Grogu, Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), the Mods, Black Krrsantan (Carey Jones), and a rancor, Boba Fett defeats the Pykes.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Star Wars: Episode IV sparked controversy among fans following its release. After Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) destroys the Death Star, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) awards him and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) the Medal of Bravery. However, Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), who also helped clear the way for Luke to take down the Empire’s planet-destroying death machine, didn’t get a medal in the film. Fans noted the lack of respect for Chewbacca in the scene, and it’s been a controversial part of Star Wars ever since.

In The Book of Boba Fett finale, Star Wars acknowledges Chewbacca’s lack of recognition. Following the battle against the Pykes, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand walk the streets, and one of the local kids gives them a fruit, which appears to be a meiloorun. Boba Fett later tosses the melon to Black Krrsantan, who takes a big bite. Skad (Jordan Bolger), one of the Mods who helped during the battle, then comments, “So, the Wookiee gets a melon, and we don’t?” Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand jokes, “Krrsantan, you want to share?” The Wookiee clearly doesn’t. And with that joke, The Book of Boba Fett gives a slight acknowledgment to Chewbacca.

The melon joke appears to be a subtle nod to Chewbacca’s lack of recognition. Since the humans get all the clout and accolades in Star Wars: Episode IV, it’s only fair that the Wookiees get their moment too. With Boba Fett snubbing the humans in The Book of Boba Fett finale, the episode gives Black Krrsantan some overdue praise for Wookiees everywhere. Of course, the moment doesn’t rectify Chewbacca’s lack of medal in Star Wars: Episode IV, but it’s a wink for all the fans wanting Wookiees to get some much-needed appreciation for their efforts.

In the years since Chewbacca’s Star Wars snub, the franchise has tried to make up for it. Star Wars literature, including Smuggler’s Run: A Han Solo & Chewbacca Adventure, retcons the films to show that Chewbacca did receive a medal. In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) also gives Chewbacca a Medal of Bravery. The Book of Boba Fettjoke with Black Krrsantan getting a melon is the latest acknowledgment of the injustice done to Chewbacca. With all its references to the moment in the years since, Star Wars will likely continue to make amends for its Wookiee mistake.
