Ranking the scariest Star Wars characters is easy if one includes obvious characters such as Darth Vader or Darth Sidious. Actually, the Star Wars galaxy is jam-packed with plenty of terrifying characters that have each earned their stripes due to their evil nature, deadly abilities and notorious reputation.

To celebrate the upcoming arrival of the Halloween season, it’s time to shine a light into the darkness and see what bone-chilling Star Wars characters creep out. Here they are, in no particular order.

10 Shimrra Jamaane

Shimrra was a member of the Yuuzhan Vong, a race of beings from beyond the unknown regions who overwhelmed the New Republic and nearly seized control of the entire galaxy. Supreme Overlord Shimrra Jamaane was their fiercest and most frightening foe, and he personally led the campaign against Republic forces and the Jedi, whom the Yuuzhan Vong viewed as heretics.

Shimrra was so vicious and evil that he murdered his own twin brother at the age of seven to establish his claim to the throne. Under his watch, over 360 trillion people died at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong until Luke Skywalker killed him in battle. While Shimrra was as frightening as they come, he was actually a puppet of a Force-sensitive Vong named Onimi, which made it all the more creepy.

9 Marka Ragnos

Marka Ragnos remains one of the fiercest and deadliest Sith Lords ever to have assumed the mantle, and he led the Sith Empire into what is commonly known as their golden age. Ragnos was especially powerful in the ways of the dark side, and his vicious spirit allowed him to influence others from beyond the grave.

Ragnos was able to guide successor Sith Lords in their quest for power, and his actions may have saved the entire order from destruction. His spirit was so powerful that he was capable of re-emerging 5000 years after his death to fill the power vacuum left by Darth Sidious.

8 Exar Kun

At first glance, Exar Kun doesn’t appear to be very scary, but his terrifying knowledge of the dark side made entire star systems tremble. The former Jedi padawan sought the knowledge of infamous Sith Lord Freedon Nadd who turned him into a disciple who waged a campaign of terror across the galaxy.

Exar Kun’s power was so terrifying that he was able to imbue his lightsaber with dark side powers that could corrupt all but the most stalwart and disciplined of Jedi masters. As such, it was permanently encased in a special resin and locked away by the council. Kun’s spirit was also powerful enough to attack Luke Skywalker on Yavin 4 after the fall of the Empire, forcing his students to band together and banish him back to the shadows.

7 Mother Talzin

Though not technically a villain by traditional standards, Mother Talzin was no less scary, especially when she put her powers to use. This Dathomirian Witch had a strong connection to the force, and she was able to manifest it through the application of black magic. This granted her vooodoo-like torture methods, mind control and spiritual divination.

If that weren’t enough, she was also the mother of Darth Maul. She was friend neither to Jedi nor Sith, and her allegiances remained firmly with the Nightsisters of Dathomir. As such, she had no evil ambitions for galactic domination, but that’s of little solace to those who crossed paths with her.

6 Darth Nihilus

Little is known of Darth Nihilus, and that might be for the best. He was a creature such as the galaxy had never seen, and his status as a Sith Lord only served to amplify his frightening presence. Nihilus was formerly human, but the activation of the Mass Shadow Generator superweapon during the battle at Malachor V severely damaged his body, effectively making him a wound in the very fabric of the Force itself.

After the incident, Nihilus developed an endless hunger for Force energy, and he could absorb it from others, notably his former master Darth Traya. In time, Nihilus was forced to infuse his very spirit and essence into his armor and mask in order to stay alive. He then led a campaign with Darth Sion to wipe out the Jedi Order.

5 Vergere

Aside from her unsettling predatory bird-like appearance, Vergere was frightening for a variety of philosophical, moral and ideological reasons. Originally a Jedi padawan, Vergere became intimate with the Yuuzhan Vong after finding the living planet Zonama Sekot. When the Vong invaded galactic space, Vergere remained part of their caste and partook in a series of sessions designed to break Jacen Solo’s will and turn him to the dark side.

It was later revealed that Vergere was actually a Sith agent who had infiltrated the Jedi Order to help destroy it from within. Theories abound that she may even have been a potential apprentice to Darth Sidious himself. Whatever the case, Vergere’s views were terrifying for a variety of reasons, and her actions contributed to one of the galaxy’s most devastating wars.

4 Darth Malgus

In many ways, Darth Malgus foreshadows the being that would eventually become Darth Vader. The two are similarly dressed, and both suffer from devastating wounds that necessitate a life support system of some sort. He participated in several major attacks between the Sith Empire and the Republic, including a mock peace deal designed to leave Coruscant vulnerable to attack.

Though Malgus was loyal to the Sith Empire, he later became disillusioned with many of the Emperor’s decisions which he believed were counterproductive. It was this kind of insubordination that would later serve as the impetus for Darth Bane’s Rule of Two.

3 Durge

The bounty hunter known as Durge was one of the galaxy’s most terrifying. For two thousand years, this Gen’Dai warrior fought the Mandalorians, the Sith and the Republic (among others), earning him his stripes as one of the most notorious killers in the business. His boneless body structure necessitated the use of a suit of armor to maintain form. It also served as a surprise for anyone who thought he was vulnerable to conventional killing methods.

Durge loathed the Mandalorians so much that he purposely joined Count Dooku’s Separatist forces in order to kill clone troopers based off of Jango Fett’s biological template. He’d eventually bite off more than he could chew when Anakin Skywalker flung his body into a star, killing him permanently.

2 The Gorax

Few creatures in the galaxy are as terrifying as the Gorax, a primitive but intelligent form of life found on the forest moon of Endor. The Gorax was a major threat to the Ewok race who lived on Endor, and they were forced to develop techniques and traps to deal with the beasts and keep them at bay.

One Gorax managed to kidnap the parents of Cindel and Mace Towani and keep them in a cage at his fortress. With the assistance of an Ewok caravan, they managed to free the parents and defeat the Gorax before escaping to safety. Ewok traps designed to deal with the Gorax were later used to battle Imperial forces guarding the Death Star II’s shield generator.

1 0-0-0

When Star Wars fans think of protocol droids, they undoubtedly picture C-3PO. In every respect, 0-0-0 (otherwise known as Triple-Zero) was the nightmarish mirror image of Threepio . His dark-silver body and menacing red photoreceptors helped distinguish him from regular protocol droids, but his programming took it to another level.

0-0-0 was so deadly that he even refused to shake hands with Darth Vader for fear of electrocuting him through his palm. His proficiency in torture, interrogation and draining organic victims of their blood were just a few reasons to be suspicious of every protocol droid that followed in his wake.
