At its heart, the Star Wars saga has always been about family. The bonds of family, the absence of family, and the destiny of a family legacy have created some of its most powerful moments. In creating the Star Wars films, George Lucas chose to focus primarily on the Skywalkers, a family of highly Force-sensitive individuals whose motivations and actions would shape the very fabric of the galaxy. Though they have been major players in the Star Wars universe, there are other families just as powerful.

Some families in Star Wars are powerful in different ways. The Hutt Family, notorious for their crime syndicate, would never be known for their combat skills or use of the Force like the House of Solo. By contrast, the House of Solo has elements of political influence that make it as renowned as the Organas, who can only claim an adopted Force-sensitive child. Here are the 10 families whose influence, wealth, or abilities make them the most powerful in the Star Wars universe.

10 Erso Family

Though the Erso’s were not a prominent family by means of wealth or political influence, their actions changed the course of galactic history, for good andfor evil, making them power players in the Star Wars Saga in ways few may have understood at the time.

Galen Erso was a genius in crystallography and energy enhancement, which made him a reluctant engineer for the Empire’s Death Star superweapon. He created a small weakness in the design that he hoped his daughter Jyn Erso would one day be able to provide the Rebel Alliance with. She was successful, allowing Rebel hero Luke Skywalker to exploit the design flaw, destroy the superweapon, and turn the tide of the Galactic Civil War.

9 Naberrie Family

While the Naberrie name may not be immediately known to some, one of its family members should certainly be. House Naberrie was known as a prominent family on Naboo in the days of the Republic, with several members becoming involved in politics. It was their daughter Padme’s pledge to public service that fast-tracked her to being inducted into the Royal House of Naboo in her teenage years, assuming the name “Amidala”.

Padme ruled for five years before becoming a senator. Her sister Pooja Naberrie would become a senator during the Imperial Era after the fall of the Republic. Padme Amidala would marry the Jedi Anakin Skywalker in secret and produce two twins to continue the Skywalker legacy.

8 Dameron Family

One of the best starfighter pilots in the galaxy, Poe Dameron was destined to serve as part of the Resistance, leading Black Squadron’s X-wings into glorious battle against the First Order. The fearless leader was the son of Lieutenant Shara Bey who served on numerous missions with Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, and Sergeant Kes Dameron of the Rebel Alliance.

Flying and fighting were in the Dameron blood, and all three of them served proudly in the memory of the Galactic Republic and the liberties it stood for. When the First Order broke the Galactic Concordance, the truce following the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebellion, Poe took to the skies in his X-Wing and became one of General Leia Organa’s most trusted fighters.

7 Fett Family

During the years directly prior to the Clone Wars and the years after the Empire gained supremacy, just hearing the surname “Fett” was enough to send shivers down the spines of most galactic citizens. The father-son bounty hunter pair of Jango and Boba Fett had a reputation for being the most ruthless members of their trade.

Jango Fett had been recruited by Darth Tyranus on the moons of Bogden to provide the genetic material needed to construct a Clone Army, with one unaltered clone available to be raised as his son. When Jango was killed, Boba took up the family business and became an even more malevolent mercenary than his father.

6 Nightbrother Clan

The mysterious Nightbrother Clan consisted of Dathomirian Mother Talzin and her two Zabrak sons, Savage Oppress and Maul. Both were strong in the Force, incredible duelists, and both had enough darkness in them to provoke the interest of both Darth Sidious and Count Dooku. Maul was once famously Darth Sidious’s pupil until his embarrassing defeat on Naboo by Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Savage Oppress was Count Dooku’s Dark Side apprentice until he turned from him and defected to construct a crime syndicate with his brother, Maul. Sidious viewed the brothers as a threat to his Sith Order, and they might have even challenged his Galactic Empire had they lived long enough to see it.

5 Hutt Family

One of the most powerful cartels and crime families in the galaxy, the Hutt Clan, often simply known as “the Hutts,” had their slimy hands in everything from pod racing, to games of chance, to brothels and other wretched hives of scum and villainy. The clan was directed by the Grand Hutt Council, which was comprised of heads of the five families from Nal Hutta.

The Hutts also controlled trade in the Outer Rim, which was highly sought after by both the Republic and the Separatist Movement during the Clone Wars. Later, during the Galactic Civil War, one of the most famous Hutts, Jabba, allied his family with the Galactic Empire, which let them keep their businesses as long as they didn’t interfere with Empire business.

4 House Serenno

To become a Jedi is to give up all material possessions and wealth, which is exactly what Count Dooku did when he took the Jedi Oath. In so doing, he forsook his claim to the holdings and land entitled to him by House Serenno, the ruling family on his home planet of the same name. However, he found the ascetic lifestyle and stubborn philosophies of the Jedi stagnant, and so left when he was an adult.

When he returned to reclaim his title, no one knew the Count of Serenno had secretly become the Sith apprentice of Darth Sidious. He utilized his wealth at his master’s behest to fund the Separatist Movement, seeking to strike a blow to the Republic Senate and by proxy the Jedi Order.

3 Organa Family

The House of Organa was comprised of Queen Breha Organa, who reigned over Alderaan, and Senator Bail Organa, her consort and representative in the Galactic Senate.  Bail Organa was horrified at the events of the Clone Wars and protested the creation of a Galactic Empire by Chancellor Palpatine at their conclusion.

Faithful defenders of the Galactic Republic, the Organas worked in secrecy during the Imperial Era to help forge the Alliance to Restore the Republic, which later became known as the Rebel Alliance, of which their adoptive daughter Princess Leia Organa was a fierce advocate. She was the only surviving member of the Royal Family when Alderaan was destroyed by the Empire’s Death Star.

2 Solo Family

Though there have been many rumors about the origins of Rebel Alliance hero Han Solo—some say he grew up a street kid on Corellia, while others claim he was part of its ruling elite—he became one of the most well-known patriarchs in the galaxy when he wed Princess Leia Organa and their son Ben Solo was born.

Leia was the last surviving member of the Alderaan Royal Family and a General of the Resistance, but her realheritage was as a Skywalker. She and her brother Luke possessed great strength in the Force, and her son Ben possessed a raw power that ultimately corrupted him, turning him into Kylo Ren, an agent of evil like his grandfather Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

1 Skywalker Family

With the strength of both the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force flowing through them, members of the Skywalker clan make up the most powerful family in the galaxy. Anakin Skywalker left his humble beginnings as a slave on Tatooine to fulfill his destiny as The Chosen One and would become the most powerful Jedi alive. He defied the Jedi Order and married Senator Padme Amidala in secret, who would bear twins.

Luke and Leia Skywalker, a son and daughter pair who would become two of the most important siblings in the galaxy, would come to know their father only after his metamorphosis into the Sith Lord Darth Vader, the tortured existence of which would inspire Leia’s son Ben Solo to embrace the Dark Side as Kylo Ren.
