To say that the final season of The Clone Wars lived up to expectations, or that the Siege of Mandalore ended the show in the best possible manner, is a severe understatement. Twelve years of build-up led to one of the very best stories told in all of Star Wars and a finale nothing short of perfect, if not heartbreaking.

The two main characters of the show — Captain Rex and Ahsoka Tano — had a huge role in the finale, and delivered the usual greatness. Here we look at each of the pairs’ best moments throughout The Clone Wars’ final season.

11 Captain Rex – Respect For Ahsoka

Something teased in the trailers that fans were excited for was not only the reunion of Anakin and Ahsoka but of Ahsoka and Rex.

The image of Anakin bringing Ahsoka to Rex, with Rex and the 501st having helmets paying homage to Ahsoka, was both emotional and beautiful — a repeated sentiment in the season. It shows the friendship of the pair and the individuality and feelings of Rex.

10 Ahsoka Tano – “Race You To The Surface!”

The Siege of Mandalore arc surprised a lot of people by jumping straight into the action with Ahsoka and Rex arriving on Mandalore with a section of the 501st.

When Mauldalorians attack, a battle ensues, and Ahsoka says to Rex, “Race you to the surface,” bringing a smile to Rex’s face. Ahsoka then flies through the air, killing Mauldalorians before landing on the ground in badass fashion in a scene nothing short of epic.

9 Captain Rex – Letting Echo Go

Not all great moments came from the Siege of Mandalore, though; Rex has some great stuff in the long-awaited Bad Batch arc.

After Echo is rescued as a shell of his former self having been ruined by the Separatists, he realizes his place belongs with the Bad Batch. In an emotional moment, Rex tells Echo to go where he feels he belongs, reinforcing the theme of individuality and belonging that is shown so prominently with the clones and Rex.

8 Ahsoka Tano – Helping Those Who Need Help

The entire arc with Rafa and Trace was not the most well-received arc on the planet, but there are some great parts to it.

It is a key point for Ahsoka, and her helping the sisters embodies her beliefs of helping people who need help. On top of that, Ahsoka’s realization that the Jedi are out of touch with real people. The nods to Anakin were also outstanding.

7 Captain Rex – Fighting His Brothers

One of the many heartbreaking aspects of the final season came in the series finale when Captain Rex was forced to battle Jesse and his other brothers.

Rex fought tears as he fought his family, stunning them all, knowing they were lost, and getting manipulated. Rex did his duty, and along with Ahsoka outmatched a lot of the clones, it was stunning and emotional.

6 Ahsoka Tano – Duel With Maul

When Maul and Ahsoka face off in the Siege of Mandalore arc, it leads to one of the greatest lightsaber battles in all of Star Wars.

The action, emotion, performances, and motion capture are all phenomenal, and it is just a perfect lightsaber duel with Ahsoka eventually able to capture Maul.

5 Captain Rex – Saving Ahsoka

One of the tensest moments of the Siege of Mandalore arc is when Ahsoka is becoming overwhelmed by troopers as they break into the medical bay.

In a moment, the clones are down and out, and Ahsoka is saved, with the camera showing an emotional Rex up on the medical table, iconic pistols in the air having shot them, saving Ahsoka.

4 Ahsoka Tano – Saving Rex

Of course, right before Rex saved Ahsoka, Ahsoka saved Rex. With the help of some droids, Ahsoka managed to save Rex from the fate of most other clones.

It is a fantastic scene with Ahsoka trapping and capturing Rex, taking him to the medical bay in a desperate attempt to find then remove the inhibitor chip. Ahsoka’s using the Force, and Chirrut Imwe’s quote was beautiful.

3 Captain Rex – Fighting Order 66

When the inevitable moment of Order 66 hit and Captain Rex spoke with Sidious, the impending doom shattered hearts.

When Rex holds his pistols, he fights as hard as he can to hold back the order, not to kill Ahsoka. With a tear in his eye, he begs Ahsoka to find his report on Fives, and gives her time to save herself, and eventually save Rex. A heroic act from Rex, and a truly devastating scene.

2 Ahsoka Tano – Not Killing The Clones

When Rex and Ahsoka look as though they are down and out with no way off the ship, they find shuttles surrounded by the Clone forces led by Jesse, ready and waiting to kill them.

Rex emotionally tells Ahsoka that they will not hesitate to kill the pair, with a tear in his eye. Ahsoka tells him she will not be the cause of their death, and so comes up with a plan. The respect and love Ahsoka has for the clones are immense, and this moment where she refuses to kill them despite them ready to execute her in an instant is a beautiful moment and a very Ahsoka thing to do. The battle of escape that then ensues is awesome, suspenseful, and emotional to watch.

1 Both – Last Act Of Respect

The very last scene with Ahsoka and Rex is painfully somber, rife with pain, heartbreak, and respect.

After the cruiser crashes, Ahsoka and Rex find their a way to the planet surface where they proceed to bury the clones with their helmets on display. Ahsoka drops her lightsaber, the camera pans across all the helmets, etched with an homage to Ahsoka, and then Jesse’s unique design. It is an ultimate final act of respect for Rex’s brothers.
