The adorable Porgs of Star Wars: The Last Jedi were famous before they ever appeared on screen, with trailers showing their greatest hero co-piloting the Millennium Falcon alongside Chewbacca and Rey. Now the mystery is over, as that Porg hero of the Resistance has officially been named–and the origin is too perfect to believe.

The most devoted Star Wars fans will know the reason Porgs were created was entirely practical. As creature concept designer Jake Lunt Davies explained, the Irish island used for Luke Skywalker’s exile is a UNESCO World Heritage site, meaning interfering with wildlife is absolutely off limits. So if the black, white, and orange puffins of the island had to stay, then Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would create a similar stand-in to excuse any puffin that found its way into a shot. But the Porg who became a certified Resistance fighter? That Porg did it all on its own.

When IDW Publishing announced they would be telling a three-part, untold story set between The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a historic Porg moment was probably the last thing fans expected. Yet that’s exactly what “Ghosts of Kashyyk” has delivered, following Chewbacca and his endlessly squawking, now-co-pilot Porg in a heroic defense of the Wookiee homeworld. A skirmish they manage to win in Star Wars Adventures #27, allowing the characters to make Star Wars history…

Yes, the heroic Porg hero of The Last Jedi is officially named ‘Terbus.’ And as a result, a twenty-month-long mission has finally been achieved. When the father and son hosts of Tatooine Sons: A Star Wars Podcast attended a screening and Q&A with Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, they asked if the Porg on board the Millennium Falcon with Chewie had a name. Instead of an answer, Johnson asked, “What do you think his name is?” When the young fan replied, “Maybe Terbus?” Johnson looked directly into camera with a message to Pablo Hidalgo of Lucasfilm’s Story Group:

‘Terbus’? Pablo, if you’re listening to this livestream: that Porg’s name is now Terbus. It’s a good Star Wars name.

Now months later, Star Wars Adventures writer John Barber and artist Derek Charm (with the suggestion from the Story Group’s Matt Martin) have made that impromptu suggestion a part of Star Wars canon, and the fans who suggested it a part of the saga’s history at the same time. So, will this naming of the certified ‘Hero Porg’ change the minds of those fans who are less than sold on the creatures? Perhaps not. Will it end the Porgs vs. Ewoks debate over which adorable species is best? Never.
