In the Star Wars Universe, Jedi come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and species. However, was there ever an Ewok that fulfilled their destiny as a Jedi Knight? In one of the rarely trodden paths of Star Wars canon that has now become “Star Wars Legends,” there was once an Ewok who was force-sensitive and wielded a lightsaber of their own, though much of their origins remain a mystery to the galaxy and fans of the diminutive and seemingly cuddly warriors.

Ewoks are a tribal species living on the forest moon of Endor, resembling small and furry teddy bears. Before the events of Return of the Jedi, they were a primitive race until unwillingly being thrust into the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebellion. The Imperials chose to build their shield generator on the moon that would protect the second Death Star up in orbit, and the construction displaced several of the Ewok tribes. When the Rebel Alliance arrived, the Ewok tribes joined the Rebellion in their efforts to destroy the Imperial forces and their generator, including notable Ewoks such as Chief Chirpa and Wicket. In the official Star Wars canon approved by Disney, many Ewoks traveled off-world after the second Death Star’s destruction, and some even joined the newly formed New Republic. One such Ewok was Peekpa, who quickly learned quite a bit about technologies used across the galaxy, becoming a slicer for a time in a crew with Han Solo and Lando Calrissian (seen in the novel Star Wars: Last Shot).

However, an older Star Wars RPG book, Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds, revealed the existence of a mysterious and unnamed Ewok Jedi Knight. Apparently, this Ewok at some point liberated its fellow Ewoks from enslavement by a group of alien Sanyassans, wielding a blue lightsaber and even wearing Jedi robes. Unfortunately, that is all that is revealed about this unique Jedi, with the rest of its life and history as a Jedi a complete mystery. Regardless, while this book has since become part of the non-canonical “Legends” banner, the idea of an Ewok using the Force is nevertheless an incredibly intriguing concept.

A force-sensitive Ewok isn’t outside of the realm of possibility either, in canon or otherwise. For example, the Ewok tribes had a group of important leaders and authorities among them: the chief, the healers, a council of elders, and the shamans. While the shaman in particular upheld their religions using tricks and illusions to captivate the tribes, Legends materials suggest that a select number of these shamans practiced what they believed to be real magic, but was actually the Force. Therefore, if this same concept runs true for the canon (there’s nothing that yet contradicts this idea), then there’s at least a logical pathway for an Ewok Jedi to one day exist in Disney’s Star Wars galaxy.

Who knows? Maybe an Ewok Jedi could be featured down the line in Star Wars canon. Perhaps a force-sensitive Ewok joined Luke’s new Jedi Order before it was wiped out by a manipulated Ben Solo? Ewoks have already proven themselves to be capable warriors in Return of the Jedi, so why couldn’t there be one that followed the path of the Jedi? Let’s not underestimate them like the Empire obviously did.
