An awesome new video brings Star Wars and Top Gun together by playing “Danger Zone” over numerous X-wing scenes. The iconic starfighters from Star Wars have been a part of the franchise since the very first film, when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) piloted his own to take out the Death Star. Since then, X-wings have represented the good guys found in the Rebellion/Resistance and even played a significant role in the final battle in last year’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That film brought Disney’s first batch of Star Wars films to a close, with more expected following a hiatus.

While Star Wars will be going away for a while (on the big screen, at least), Top Gun is making a big comeback. Thirty-four years after the original film soared into theaters, Tom Cruise is stepping back into the role of Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell with Top Gun: Maverick. The film was initially scheduled for June, but the coronavirus pandemic forced Maverick to fly away to December. To hype up the film, Cruise has teased no film will ever be made like Maverick again thanks to its impressive aerial sequences.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Evidently Star Wars‘ own aerial sequences made Jackson McKay think of Top Gun, for he mixed the two together in a brilliant way. By playing Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” – a song made specially for Top Gun – along with X-wing footage from all Star Wars films from A New Hope to The Rise of Skywalker (and including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), McKay has made one thrilling video. The X-wing scenes from Star Wars are undoubtedly exciting to watch, but Top Gun: Maverick might promise some sequences that are even more awe-inspiring. This is largely because the aerial segments in Top Gun: Maverick were done without any CGI, fitting in with Cruise’s preference for making all of his stunts as realistic as possible. Provided this doesn’t freak viewers out too much, it should give Top Gun: Maverick a more grounded (while being high in the sky) feel.

It might be some time until Star Wars fans get to see an X-wing in action again now that the films are on a break. Recently, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi was tapped to helm the next film in the franchise, but as of right now, it’s unclear about what it will focus on. Still, it shows that the franchise has no plans of going away any time soon. Fans will just have to be patient for a little while. If they want some high-flying adventures, at least they have the next Top Gun to turn to.
