Warning! Spoilers for The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+ below
Black Krrsantan has just made his Star Wars live-action debut in The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+, but the Wookiee bounty hunter’s first appearance in the comics came with a hilarious working name: Newbacca. Black Krrsantan co-creator Kieron Gillen shared the working name for the gladiator Wookiee on his Twitter account, promising that it wasn’t a joke and it actually was Newbacca.
Marvel Comics introduced a handful of new characters to the Star Wars universe in 2015’s Darth Vader series by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca. Among them included the artifact hunter and archaeologist Doctor Aphra, Triple Zero, and the Wookie bounty hunter, Black Krrsantan. The bounty hunter appeared in Darth Vader #1 and was hired by Darth Vader alongside Boba Fett to track down Cylo. His connection to Boba Fett is getting further explored in The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+, where the Wookie works for the Hutt Twins. Fett and Black Krrsantan’s past seems like it will play a big part in the live-action Star Wars series.
Black Krrsantan’s co-creator Kieron Gillen has been dropping some fun background on the character on his Twitter account as The Book of Boba Fett airs. Last week, Gillen revealed he wasn’t entirely sure how to pronounce Black Krrsantan’s name, admitting he’d love to find out. However, Gillen did offer a guess, saying he pronounced it, “K-rur! San-tan.” This week, the writer provided another story about Black Krrsantan’s name, revealing his working name for the bounty hunter was “Newbacca,” an obvious reference to the most famous Wookie in the Star Wars universe, Chewbacca.
I swear this isn’t a joke. I just went back to my first draft for Darth Vader 1. My working name for Black Krrsantan was Newbacca.

Gillen added he swears it wasn’t a joke and that Newbacca was actually Black Krrsantan’s working name. Gillen also shared that it would be a fun exercise to go back into his original drafts of Darth Vader and find the working names of all of his characters – as many of them used working names in place of their actual ones. The writer said, “There’s a lot of SEARCH AND REPLACE as I move to finalise a script.”
Honestly, going back to my first drafts and finding working names for all my characters could be a fun exercise. There’s a lot of SEARCH AND REPLACE as I move to finalise a script.

While it’s still not obvious how to pronounce Black Krrsantan’s name, the Wookie bounty hunter is one of the coolest creations to come out of Gillen and Larocca’s Darth Vader series. Seeing the antihero join the live-action Star Wars universe on The Book of Boba Fett means the character’s name should become more popular. Although, if you can’t pronounce Black Krrsantan, his working name of Newbacca is a nice placeholder.
