Arrow star Stephen Amell has admitted that he once thought the show should end with season 7 – at least until he heard the idea for season 8. Amell has played Oliver Queen (aka the Green Arrow) since the show premiered in 2012. Arrow has gone through many changes since season 1, with several characters exiting the series. The seventh season introduced viewers to Star City in the year 2040 and with it, Oliver’s grown children, Mia and William. Arrow also spawned the CW’s popular Arrowverse, leading to shows like The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and the upcoming new series Batwoman.

Though the rest of the Arrowverse will continue on, it was announced in March that Arrow will end with season 8. The final season will be the shortest, with only 10 episodes. Amell celebrated the end of filming on the season 8 premiere earlier this week. The last season will also be the only one without Emily Bett Rickards’ Felicity Smoak, as Rickards revealed her departure from the series this past spring. However, other characters will fill the void, with Charlie Barnett recently cast as John Diggle, Jr. and Katherine McNamara and Ben Lewis both returning. McNamara and Lewis play Mia Smoak and William Clayton, respectively.

In a Facebook Live video posted last night (via Comic Book), Amell revealed that he was initially hesitant about taking Arrow past season 7. He stated “I think that we’ve had our running time…I felt like we had done our thing. I thought that ultimately, theoretically season 7 should have been the end of things.” However, Amell acknowledged that the structure of season 8 made him change his mind, saying:

“But to come back and do 10 episodes…what they’ve done with this final season is really cool. It’s like nothing you guys have ever seen. Every episode that comes out, it’s like ‘Wait a minute, what? It’s happening what and where and how? Ok, that’s cool. Let’s do it!'”

Amell also shared that Oliver’s journey played a role in his decision, saying “My character’s had a chance over the first three episodes to reconcile with like five different characters, and that’s just really, really cool.” Check out the video below:

With the highly anticipated Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover coming up, it’s hard to imagine Arrow ending last season. This is especially true because of how Arrow‘s seventh season ended, with the Monitor collecting Oliver to help him save the world. The crossover will feature the Anti-Monitor as its villain, with LaMonica Garrett taking on both parts. He’s not the only actor with a dual role either; it was announced during Comic-Con 2019 that Legends of Tomorrow star Brandon Routh will play both the Atom and Kingdom Come Superman for Crisis on Infinite Earths. Tyler Hoechlin, the Arrowverse’s original Superman, will play a version of the character as well.

Though fans may have been fine with Arrow ending with season 7, they’re probably even happier to have the extra 10 episodes of season 8. It’s a good number of episodes to bring back beloved past characters and give current characters a proper sendoff. Also, since Crisis on Infinite Earths will be the Arrowverse’s biggest crossover yet, it feels right that the show that started it all is a part of it. Not only will it give Team Arrow a final opportunity to shine, it will also let them say goodbye to characters they love from the other Arrowverse shows. Most importantly, season 8 will give Arrow fans one more chance to “Suit up!”
