Stephen King’s New Book About A Boy & His Dog Releases In September
This coming September, the acclaimed novelist Stephen King is set to release his latest novel, Fairy Tale, about a boy, his dog, and a portal to another world. The highly prolific author is responsible for some of the most beloved (and chilling) horror novels of all time, many of which have subsequently been adapted into hit films, such as The Shining, IT, and Misery – to name just a few. His work has received numerous awards throughout his nearly 50-year career, leaving little doubt that King is one of the greatest American novelists of all time.
Despite waning eyesight, at 74, King shows no signs of slowing down, and throughout much of his extensive career, he’s produced a book per year. At times, King has even released more than one novel per year and taken part in collaborations (such as his recent work with Richard Chizmar.) Beyond his publications, there’s also his film and television contributions and even the odd cameo in some of these productions. Loyal King fans have counted on the author to produce highly imaginative and consistent work for decades. Although the film adaptations of his work often haven’t met consistent critical acclaim, they’ve always been enough to enthrall his core group of die-hard fans. With the new year now almost a month old, King fans will be thrilled to know that a new novel is on the way.
According to Amazon, the masterful horror/suspense writer will release his latest novel, Fairy Tale, on September 6, 2022. The story follows 17-year-old Charlie Reade, who befriends aging recluse Howard Bowditch and his dog, Radar. After his death, Bowditch leaves Charlie a cassette tape, which explains that there is a portal to another world in the shed near his house. What follows is a journey into a land where good struggles to conquer overwhelming evil and in which Charlie and Radar must lead this fight.
Pre-orders for Fairy Tale are currently being taken, and at 608 pages, it’s King’s longest novel since 2017’s Sleeping Beauties. The new novel is the second of which the famed author plans to release in 2022, with the third installment of his previously mentioned collaboration with Chizmar – Gwendy’s Final Task – set to arrive next month, officially culminating the Gwendy’s Button Box trilogy. As for Fairy Tale, King found the inspiration to write it during the Covid-19 pandemic, insisting that he wanted to write something that would make him happy. From the sounds of it, however, Fairy Tale doesn’t necessarily sound like an overwhelmingly happy novel, though one of the great things about King’s writing is that he’s always been able to see different, sometimes uplifting angles in dark and sinister material.
If anything good has come out of the ongoing pandemic, it’s that creatives such as Stephen King have had plenty of opportunities to fully dedicate themselves to new projects. Not that King has ever been unable to dedicate himself to his work, however, but the realities surrounding the pandemic have indeed created an all-new set of opportunities. Perhaps it is this sort of positive thinking with regard to a very frightening and often heartbreaking issue that King has been able to mirror to a certain degree in the dark-sounding Fairy Tale.
