Stephenie Meyer, author of the young adult book series Twilight, has hinted that she’s not quite done with the story. Though the vampire romance story officially concluded in 2008 with the book Breaking Dawn, there may actually be more story to tell. The four books in the original series were turned into a five-movie franchise that wrapped up in 2012.

Meyer has found huge success with the Twilight book series and its equally popular film adaptations, and had initially planned to write spinoff books of the series including Midnight Sun, told from vampire Edward Cullen’s point of view. Meyer abandoned the novel after a first draft of it was leaked online, but shocked fans this year with a surprise release of the book, a whole 12 years after the project was first announced. For fans hoping for more Twilight content, this was an especially good sign.

Now, USA Today reports Meyer teased the additional books during an online event for bookstore chain Books-a-Million promoting the release of Midnight Sun. But while Meyer states that there are more stories in the Twilight world to tell, she emphasized she isn’t quite ready to complete those books yet. She said:

There are two more books I think in the world that I want to write. I have got them outlined and a chapter written I think of the first one, so I know it’s there. I am not ready to do that right now, I want to do something brand new.

Meyer’s hesitation to return to the world of Twilight may have to do with the significant backlash the original books received in their heyday. At the height of Twilight’s popularity, both the author and those involved in the film adaptations of her work were the subject of constant scrutiny, but in reevaluating the Twilight series, it seems undeserving of all the hate it received. It’s understandable that Meyer would respond to that hate by pulling away from the franchise.

However, it’s clear from the author’s work over the past few years that this story is still near and dear to her heart. Meyer has previously revisited the Twilight series with Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, which tells a gender-bent version of the original story. The author also has stated that she would like to go back and change elements of the original Twilight books if she could, which clearly illustrates her desire to keep telling this story.

If Meyer ever does come back to release these next two Twilight novels, there’s no telling what new focus these stories might take. While we could get more stories from Edward’s perspective, it’s more likely that these books will focus on a different character, or even introduce new main characters into the vampire world. In the meantime, however, fans will have to remain content with the new release of Midnight Sun and the Twilightseries that brought them to this point in the first place.
