The second teaser trailer for Stranger Things season 4 proves that the show will be fixing one of its biggest mistakes from season 2. Debuting in mid-2016, Stranger Things soon became a huge hit for streaming service and the show’s creators, and it’s not hard to see why the show has struck a chord with audiences. Stranger Things combines Stephen King with Stephen Spielberg in its thrilling, scary, nostalgic story of a group of lovable kids discovering a government conspiracy, a telekinetic girl, and a dimension-hopping monster in their seemingly quiet hometown.

However, while Stranger Things may enjoy critical acclaim thanks to its talented multi-generational cast and the careful tonal balancing act that it pulls off by bouncing between horror, sci-fi, and teen dramedy, the show is not without its problems. The most recent season of the series saw criticism for making the once-likable Hopper into a mean-spirited, abusive figure, and critics noted season 3 also included one of Stranger Things’ worst subplots so far. But the show’s biggest mistake came back in Stranger Things season 2, when an entire episode was devoted to Eleven traveling to Chicago and coming across her “Lost Sister” Kali – a mistake that season 4 now promises to fix, according to the latest teaser.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Stranger Things season 2 earned the ire of fans by opening on a dramatic crime being pulled off in inner-city Chicago by a group of hitherto-unseen punks, one of whom shared similar powers to Eleven. The show then ignored this revelation for most of the season before finally explaining who these characters were in season 2’s seventh episode, “The Lost Sister.” This episode, which introduced the eponymous Lost Sister Kali, revealed that there are other test subjects with powers similar to Eleven’s, a potentially huge twist for the show to explore. However, the mixed reception to the outing meant the revelation was mostly ignored throughout season 3. The latest trailer for season 4, though, includes footage of the other test subjects playing with preschool toys and a chess set, meaning Stranger Things will dedicate time to exploring their stories rather than doing a quick one-off adventure.

The Stranger Things season 4 teaser, although almost as brief as the earlier trailer that confirmed Hopper’s survival, still shows that the other test subjects will play a bigger part in the plot of the upcoming season. The scene in the trailer seems to be a flashback, but the presence of the test subjects here means they are likely have a part to play in the main story, too, potentially bridging everything together that’s happening in the present day.

It is good news for fans awaiting Stranger Things season 4, as the main reason “The Lost Sister” failed was because the episode felt like a pilot for another series. The interesting reveal was ruined by being a random, out-of-place narrative detour with no clear connection to the season’s main plot. This trailer, though, shows Stranger Things season 4 will be ingraining the test subjects (and by extension, the origin of Eleven’s powers) into the season’s main story, making the potential return of Kali and company a far more welcome addition this time around.
