There’s never a shortage of Stranger Things theories making the rounds on the internet, but one in particular has a very low chance of coming true. The theory suggests that a Russian spy was introduced in season 3, and it was none other than Dustin’s girlfriend, Suzie. The character, portrayed by Gabriella Pizzolo, appeared in one scene, but it happened to be one of the most memorable within the entire Netflix series thus far. However, Suzie isn’t the character that fans should be worried about.

When Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) arrived back in Hawkins after spending time at Camp Know Where at the start of Stranger Things season 3, he revealed to his friends that he had a girlfriend named Suzie. Dustin built a giant radio to keep in contact with his flame from camp but was unable to reach her. Despite his claims that she was “hotter than Phoebe Cates,” his friends, including Steve, weren’t convinced that Suzie even existed. Dustin finally got a hold of his girlfriend from Salt Lake City when he needed help in cracking the code for Hopper and Joyce to break into the control room in the Russian base under Starcourt Mall. Before giving him the code to Planck’s Constant, Suzie made Dustin sing a duet to the theme song of The NeverEnding Story.

After their big performance, Suzie gave Dustin the code and signed off, making for her only appearance in the series. There has been an ample amount of worry within the fan community that someone in Hawkins could be serving as a Russian spy. According to a recent interview with Gaten Matarazzo (via Variety), the actor’s favorite theory going around centers of Suzie being a “Russian mastermind and spy working with the Russian government.” Matarazzo added that the theory is funny, but he hopes it doesn’t come true, insinuating that it would be weird for his character and the show in general. Thankfully, the theory doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

Why Suzie Isn’t A Russian Spy In Stranger Things

There’s no reason to believe that Suzie, a proud nerd from another state, has any interest in the happenings in Hawkins, Indiana. The Russians portrayed in Stranger Things are an intimidating bunch so they surely wouldn’t hire a young girl to do their undercover work. If they wanted to spy on the kids, they would force someone who has the opportunity to reside in Hawkins so that the location of the mysterious events could be observed 24/7. Dustin most likely kept most of his past hidden from Suzie while the duo attended the camp, and there isn’t much that Suzie could gather from the radio, even if they were in constant contact. Furthermore, if Suzie was a spy, she would have been told not to give Dustin or his friends any important information that could potentially help them gather access or intel into the Russian base in her boyfriend’s hometown.

Unless Stranger Things starts throwing down real evidence that Suzie has a dark secret, there’s no reason to believe this theory. That’s not to say that Suzie couldn’t return in season 4 or beyond. Maybe she will visit Dustin or the series will continue the pair’s long-distance relationship through radio communication. If that’s the case, viewers will be crossing their fingers for another epic and amusing musical duet.
