Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp has confessed to hating Will’s haircut on the show. Schnapp, who plays the taciturn Will Byers in the hit Netflix series, also indicates he would love it if he didn’t have to wear the style as part of his character’s 80s getup. The hairstyle came to the fore in the 1970s and was pretty popular as it was neat and easy work for barbers, but it began to fade away in the early to mid-80s and is now considered to be a subject of derision.

Schnapp, 15, has locked down the Will Byers role, appearing in all three seasons of Stranger Things as the son of Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers and brother of Charlie Heaton’s Jonathan Byers. The gripping series portrays Will as the timidest among his close group of friends (Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Eleven and Max) in the fictional Hawkins, Indiana. In season 1, he mysteriously vanishes before it’s revealed his disappearance is the result of an ill-fated brush with a monster that leaves him trapped in an alternate dimension called the “Upside Down.” A daring rescue fashioned by his mother and friends, along with David Harbour’s Jim Hopper (Hawkins Chief of Police) brings him back but his return in season 2 sees him become possessed by the Upside Down’s “Mind Flayer.” The show’s third installment paints Will as a bit of an outsider due to his friends being more interested in their romantic relationships, yet he becomes crucial in the battle against the Mind Flayer as his connection with the monster helps him detect its presence or activity.

Schnapp, a recent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss the show’s inbound fourth season, admitted he hates Will’s haircut when asked about it by the host, who also produced a photo of said style during the interview. Fallon asserted Will’s style is “one of the best things on television” but the actor was quick to butt in with an objection, claiming its actually one of the worst, before revealing he’s constantly asking the studio’s hair and makeup department to alter his look. Fallon would go on to prod the young actor about his meeting Zendaya last year, bringing out a printout of Schnapp’s Instagram photo of him holding the Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home star at the People’s Choice Awards in November. Schnapp was still gushing, despite being several months removed from the event, and did not shy away from proclaiming his obsession over the 23-year-old actress.

None of the Hawkins kids were shown in the Stranger Things season 4 trailer that was released last month so we can’t be sure what Will Byers will look like – he wasn’t wearing a bowl cut in this month’s table read video. It’s unlikely the showrunners will give in to Schnapp’s request for a change of hairdo given Stranger Things‘ 1980s aesthetic, although the series could leak into the 90s, which might present him with a stronger case.
