Legendary chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura has been banned from Twitch after streaming a chess match between Dr Lupo and Dr Disrespect. Herschel “Guy” Beahm, better known by his online alias Dr Disrespect, is a popular streamer who was permanently banned from Twitch back in 2020. While a lawsuit between Dr Disrespect and Twitch was settled amicably earlier this month, it appears that the battle royale streamer is still blacklisted from the live streaming service.

Dr Disrespect was banned from Twitch in June 2020, and the exact cause for the streamer’s permanent removal from the platform is still a mystery. Twitch has only explained that Disrespect somehow violated the platform’s guidelines or terms of service, but his exact actions are unknown. Dr Disrespect has also alternated between stances on the matter, sometimes saying that he knows the reason for the ban and other times claiming to be unaware of the cause. Beahm took a month away from streaming following his ban from Twitch, but Dr Disrespect returned to YouTube in August 2020 and he currently hosts his streams on that platform.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While he did not host the stream, PC Gamer reports that Dr Disrespect’s mere presence was enough for Twitch to ban chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. The five-time United States champion apparently streamed himself watching and commentating on an online chess match between Dr Disrespect and fellow YouTube streamer Dr Lupo. While watchers warned Nakamura that streaming Disrespect on Twitch may result in a ban, the grandmaster brushed off these concerns during the March 16 stream. Then, on March 22, Nakamura reported on Twitter that he had been banned from the platform for three days.

Dr Disrespect’s ban from Twitch is still being taken seriously by the live streaming platform, though the streamer has made surprise appearances in the past. For example, a Gamer Fuel ad featuring Dr Disrespect was aired on Twitch back in April 2021, marking a humorous return to the platform. A BoomTV Twitch stream apparently ran the ad by accident, and Twitch was apparently notified about the mistake immediately. While banning ads that feature Dr Disrespect may seem like overkill, this event illustrates how seriously Twitch has taken the situation with its former star.

Hikaru Nakamura is one of the greatest and most recognizable chess players in the world, but even he has been caught in the crossfire between Twitch and Dr Disrespect. The former Twitch streamer is apparently banned from making any appearance on the platform whatsoever, even if another user like Nakamura is hosting the stream. The reason for Dr Disrespect’s ban from Twitch may always be a mystery, but Hikaru Nakamura is unfortunately paying for that friction.
