Despite much speculation over when it might come to an end, HBO content head Casey Bloys says hit drama Succession doesn’t yet have a final season planned. Over the course of three seasons, Succession has built itself up to be one of the most critically acclaimed shows on television. In 2020, it swept at the Emmys and proved itself as a force to be reckoned with. Then, last fall, Succession returned for a long-awaited season 3 that upended the game with its jaw-dropping season finale. Audiences and critics alike have praised creator Jesse Armstrong’s sharp take on the rich and powerful in America, focusing specifically on the Murdoch-esque Roy family.

Succession has been renewed for season 4 and will likely return in either late 2021 or early 2022. However, even though there are more episodes to come, some have already begun to wonder when the Waystar Royco saga will come to a close. Speculation that the end might be near for Succession was fueled by star Brian Cox, who said last year he thinks it could close up after one or two more seasons. Cox, who plays vicious patriarch Logan, even shared his belief that Succession season 4 truly could end up being the last.

Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, but even those in charge at HBO aren’t sure yet. In a recent interview with TVLine, HBO content chief Casey Bloys responded to the question of whether season 4 might be Succession‘s final bow. Bloys confirmed what many had already suspected – that the decision lies with Armstrong – and stated he’s waiting to hear from the creative team. His full comments are:

That’ll be [series creator] Jesse [Armstrong]’s call, obviously. He’s with the writers now, talking about Season 4. I imagine at some point he will let us know where he lands on whether this is the last or if there’s more. Generally speaking, we leave it to the showrunner/creators to come to us to let us know when it’s the time to end the story. So we’ll see.

With any good TV show, the instinct for the powers that be is likely to let it go on forever. And indeed, there are many shows that have gone on/are going on well past what many considered to be a natural endpoint. Succession clearly won’t be one of those, but one still has to hope that it ends at the right time and for the right reasons. One could make the argument there’s still plenty of story to cover; Succession season 3 ended with Logan coming out on top once again, but there has to be a change of power at some point, right? If so, it might make sense to let the series continue on for at least two more seasons.

Bloys said Armstrong and his writing team are planning out Succession season 4 now, so even those working on the show might not know if it end is near. Unfortunately, that means fans will be in a state of limbo themselves as they wait for more news. In the meantime, they can consider what Tom’s (Matthew Macfadyen) finale betrayal means for Succession going forward and once again debate over who should be the head of Waystar when all is said and done. Eventually, that won’t even be a question they can consider, so better place those bets now.
