The squad is back, and based on a new poster released online today, they’re dying to save the world—again. The Suicide Squad, the follow-up to David Ayer’s 2016 film, Suicide Squad, is the next big installment in the DECU. Directed by James Gunn, best known for his work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the upcoming film will see the return of DC’s wackiest team of criminals, including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney). Additionally, the movie will introduce new heroes to the DECU like the fan-favorite King Shark (Steve Agee) and Bloodsport (Idris Elba).

As teased in multiple clips and trailers, The Suicide Squad promises an epic ride for DC’s team of villains. Imprisoned in the notorious Belle Reve Penitentiary, Task Force X is is given a mission by A.R.G.U.S. director, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), to wreak havoc on a Nazi-era prison in the South American island of Corto. Once there, the team faces off with the evil Starro, who is indeed, a massive, psychic starfish. Through the use of its extraterrestrial spores, Starro the Conqueror is able to control people, and is large enough to knock down entire skyscrapers with its super strength.

On Tuesday, fans of the DECU not only received the final trailer for The Suicide Squad, but also, a brand new poster. Bold text in the background of the poster, debuted by Gunn on Twitter, reads, “they’re dying to save the world,” and shows the ensemble cast running in what appears to be a heavy, likely starfish-related storm. Check out the poster below:

In March 2019, producer Peter Safran explicitly stated that The Suicide Squad was not, in fact, a follow up to Ayer’s Suicide Squad, hence the reason why the upcoming film isn’t titled Suicide Squad 2. Safran described the new film as a “total reboot,” which didn’t come as a complete surprise following the criticisms surrounding the last Suicide Squad installment. Warner Bros. jumped at the opportunity to get Gunn onboard for The Suicide Squad after he was dropped by Disney over controversial tweets back in 2018, hoping to give the squad another shot in the DECU.

Whether giving the Suicide Squad another chance will pay off for Warner Bros. remains to be seen, but as of now, DC continues to fuel the hype surrounding the highly anticipated film with new posters and clips. The final trailer teases a dark backstory for Elba’s Bloodsport, introduces Weasel in a funny full ensemble scene, and of course, includes plenty of the action and explosions fans have come to expect from Gunn. The Suicide Squad is going to be a very different movie for the DECU, and will hopefully work to repair the cinematic reputation of DC’s greatest villain-heroes.
