The Suicide Squad‘s Daniela Melchior wonders if future DCEU projects will make Ratcatcher II a supervillain. In the lead-up to its release, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad was the talk of the summer, and though its box office performance has been smaller than expected, it has certainly made a splash among DC fans. Acting as a quasi-reboot and sequel, the latest installment in the DCEU takes a new Task Force X and plunges them into a dangerous mission on the fictional island of Corto Maltese. This squad is notably different than the one from the 2016 Suicide Squad for two main reasons: Everyone’s seriously messed up, and several members die.

The Suicide Squad is chock full of characters waiting to win over fans, from long-running favorite Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) to the goofy but surprisingly loveable Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). Singling out one particular MVP is difficult, though Melchior’s Ratcatcher II is likely a major frontrunner. A sleepy millennial with the ability to control rats, Ratcatcher II (aka Cleo Cazo) is the unofficial beating heart of The Suicide Squad.

Melchior sat down with Collider and reflected on what the future looks like for Ratcatcher II beyond The Suicide Squad. After spending so much time alone, her experience with Task Force X has likely changed her for good, and Melchior agrees. Though she doesn’t know exactly what lies ahead, there’s definitely a shift in perspective for Ratcatcher II. Melchior said:

“I would say that she’s making friends for the first time. After her father dies and she’s alone with Sebastian and the rest of the rats, she’s always in a defensive approach to her life. She’s always alone, fighting for her survival and she doesn’t see friends anywhere. She’s always afraid that somebody will do something to hurt her, so she’s always with this small circle that it’s just her and her rats and Sebastian. And in the end of this adventure, I really feel like for the first time after losing her parents, she has a family. So I’m really curious what’s going to happen next. Maybe they will turn her into a super-villain. I don’t know!”

Ratcatcher II was perhaps the kindest and most honorable character in The Suicide Squad, so it’s a bit hard to imagine her suddenly becoming a full-on supervillain. However, another part of Melchior’s comments hints at the one thing that could make her turn: Her new family. If something were to happen to King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) or Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Ratcatcher II might have a reason to use her powers for bad instead of good. It could be an interesting turn for the character, though it also might not win over those who have fallen for Ratcatcher II following The Suicide Squad.

The main question now is simply: Where will Ratcatcher II turn up next? The Suicide Squad doesn’t have a confirmed sequel just yet, though Gunn has said he has ideas for future projects. Melchior’s Ratcatcher II has become a fan favorite online, so it would make sense to bring her back for another project. In fact, the entire found family of The Suicide Squad could make for some exciting stories in the future. Right now, fans are waiting for confirmation that more is on the way from these characters, and it sounds like Melchior is just as eager as everyone else to know what’s coming.
