Producer and host Geoff Keighley has confirmed that Summer Game Fest will return in 2022. The summer-long digital event, first held in 2020, was created to replace 2020’s Electronic Entertainment Expo after the event’s cancellation. Summer Game Fest returned in 2021, with Geoff Keighley’s exciting video game event now shaping up to be an enduring annual tradition.

Kicking off in June 2021, last year’s Summer Game Fest delivered a number of exciting game reveals and in-depth trailers to its digital audience. A brand-new gameplay trailer for FromSoftware’s Elden Ring drew a massive amount of attention, giving role-playing game fans a closer look at the anticipated open-world adventure. Other titles, such as Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Death Stranding Director’s Cut, were announced by Geoff Keighley for the very first time. Summer Game Fest’s digital nature and greater length allowed it to challenge E3 2021, despite the established event’s much longer broadcast history. Summer Game Fest 2021’s special guests like Jeff Goldblum also contributed to the digital showcase’s success, drawing in viewers with both its gaming announcements and professional style.

Summer Game Fest and Game Awards host Geoff Keighley has officially announced Summer Game Fest 2022 via Twitter. While nothing is officially revealed about the upcoming event, the announcement does presumably confirm that Keighley will return as the digital showcase’s executive producer and main host. No specific dates have been given yet, but gamers can expect Summer Game Fest to return in the summer of 2022. The Summer Game Fest website has also been updated to reflect the event’s 2022 return.

Ironically, Geoff Keighley’s reveal of Summer Game Fest 2022 comes very shortly after another major announcement regarding this year’s Electronics Entertainment Expo. While originally intended as a live in-person event, it was recently revealed that E3 2022 is cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns and will be held as an online-only event. Ongoing health risks have caused plans to change, so now both Summer Game Fest and E3 will be held as rival digital events in 2022. It is expected that E3 will still stick to its original schedule and line-up of content, but no live audience will be present to witness the event in person.

After E3’s cancellation in 2020, Summer Game Fest managed to swoop in and take its place as the largest annual video game event. Geoff Keighley unleashed some exciting game reveals and trailers in 2021, and 2022 will no doubt push the envelope further by delivering an even more thrilling digital experience. The announcement that E3 2022 will be online-only also takes away one of that event’s biggest strengths, meaning that Summer Game Fest 2022 may soon dominate its biggest competitor.
