The upcoming 2D pixel art dungeon editor Super Dungeon Maker by indie developer FIRECHICK will allow players to create and share their levels – giving fans a glimpse of what a Zelda Maker game by Nintendo might have looked like. Currently, in early access on Steam, the title is slated for release sometime in Q4 of 2021.

Following the success and popularity of Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker series, many fans clamored for a Zelda adaptation using the Mario Maker formula, a request which was renewed upon the inclusion of Chamber Dungeons, a basic dungeon creator featured in the 2019 Switch remake of the 1993 Game Boy title, Link’s Awakening. At the time, The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma hinted at the possibility of a full Zelda Maker game should Chamber Dungeons prove popular, stating “I can’t predict the future, but if people do love this idea of arranging dungeons, I’ll keep that in mind going forward.” Despite that, Nintendo has not made any announcements regarding such a title.

During The Escapist Indie Showcase, the developers behind Super Dungeon Maker showed off a trailer for their upcoming title and revealed that their inspiration for the game came from Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Maker series. The 2D dungeon editor will offer players the opportunity to design their dungeon and share it with others online, featuring statistics such as world record time, and completion rates, similar to Super Mario Maker. Players will be able to let their creativity run free, with no limit to the number of levels, enemies, bosses, or items placed. While the game is expected to release later this year, a demo of the game is currently available on Steam, with plans for a Switch port after Super Dungeon Maker leaves early access.

In the past, Nintendo has provided some opportunities for players to design Zelda-themed levels and dungeons, but with limitations. A Super Mario Maker 2 update gave players the ability to transform Mario into Link with the use of the Master Sword, however, this was restricted to levels designed using the original Super Mario Bros. theme. The ability to create basic dungeons was also offered in the Switch remake of Link’s Awakening and gave fans a glimpse of what a Zelda Maker game could be like.

Considering the success of the Super Mario Maker series, it’s surprising that Nintendo did not look towards creating a Legend of Zelda Maker franchise, despite the many requests from its fans. Luckily, Zelda fans looking to get creative will not have to wait for Nintendo to build the 2D dungeon of their dreams, thanks to the developers at FIRECHICK.

Super Dungeon Maker will release on Steam in Q4 2021.
