A dedicated group of Super Mario fans has recreated Super Mario World entirely from memory. Nintendo’s 1990 platform game was notable for being both the first Mario game on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the first game to feature Mario’s dinosaur companion Yoshi. Super Mario World has Mario and Yoshi work together to rescue both Princess Toadstool and Dinosaur Land from Bowser and his Koopaling minions. Now several fans have recreated the beloved video game.

Because the Super Mario platform game series is so monumental in Nintendo’s history, many Nintendo fans work hard to keep the game series alive. For example, when Nintendo suffered a massive data breach last year, a large amount of data was leaked online. Nintendo fans and hackers combed over the thousands of files that were brought to light, looking for anything that would prove useful or interesting. Taking the source codes of games, developer materials, and test ROMs, tech-savvy fans were able to source code to create Nintendo console emulators more authentic. In June, a talented hacker that goes by the name MrL314 managed to restore the official track level editor used in Super Mario Kart. Thanks to MrL314’s efforts, Nintendo fans can try editing the levels in Super Mario Kart for themselves.

As reported by Game Rant, a group of tech-savvy fans on SMW Central has taken it upon themselves to recreate Super Mario World from only their memory. The version they recreated is actually the 1994 remastered version of Super Mario World, which is almost identical to the original 1990 game. The group reconstructed not only the levels and maps in the game but also all of the songs. Other than doing the recreation from memory, they used in-game sprites and the SoundFont of the game to recreate the game’s music.

Even if SMW Central’s Super Mario World recreation is impressive, it would still give Super Mario speedrunners trouble. Because the group re-did the game entirely from memory, there are a couple of discrepancies when comparing the groups’ remake with the original game. For example, some of the levels are designed so confusingly that it makes the game frustratingly more difficult than the original actually is. Furthermore, the music is also off sometimes slightly and sometimes the song would be in the completely wrong key. Fans who played the recreation have commented saying SMW Central’s version is an example of the “uncanny valley” phenomenon.

Though SMW Central’s Super Mario World recreation can be described as unsettling, it’s clear from the comments that Super Mario fans enjoyed playing it. Thanks to the hard work of die-hard, old-school Nintendo fans everywhere, the legacy of these early Mario games will live on.
