In a change from the more traditional Mario media, Super Nintendo World’s Peach has been caught on camera speaking in full sentences. Princess Peach is a mainstay in Nintendo’s Super Mario franchise. Despite this, she is often depicted as the damsel in distress who is being held captive by Bowser. Princess Toadstool seldom has lines beyond the promise of a freshly baked cake or a cry of “Mario!” Peach does not even get a line in the Super Mario Bros. film from the 90s – she simply is not in it. Even in various Super Mario spin off games, such as Mario Tennis Aces, her lines are limited to “Oooh” and “Ahhh.”

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Nintendo did make an effort to elevate Princess Peach beyond her stereotypical “girl in need of rescue” trope in 2005, when the company released Super Princess Peach for the Nintendo DS. Sadly though, this game ended up being a sexist mess. Rather than becoming a leading lady who is capable in her own right, Peach was reduced to an overly emotional protagonist who somehow still ends the game being swept off her feet by Mario, despite it being her who rescued him.

Yet, even though Princess Peach may not be known in the Super Mario games as an eloquent lyricist, that has not stopped her from becoming a bit of a chatterbox at Super Nintendo World. In a video captured by PeachNintendo64 and shared on Twitter, the Princess can be seen openly conversing with the theme park’s patrons and even inviting them up for a socially distanced photo with her. Mario had better watch his back though, as at one point she can be heard calling one visitor her “prince.” It is quite refreshing to see the ruler of the Toadstool Kingdom being so loquacious and gregarious.

Nintendo has been rightfully excited about the opening of Super Nintendo World. While the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that things have been scaled back, such as a limit of 5000 visitors per day, it has still managed to generate a lot of hype. Nintendo recently shared a selection of merch that visitors will be able to purchase from the Super Nintendo World gift shop, which includes a Princess Peach headdress for those wishing to emulate the cake-baking royal.

Nintendo has had some big anniversaries to celebrate over the last 24 months. This year, its Legend of Zelda series will turn 35 and in 2020, the Super Mario franchise also turned 35. With this milestone came the rerelease of some of Mario’s most classic games. Perhaps moving forward, Nintendo will give Princess Peach a true chance to shine, and make her much more like the confident and chatty lead that can be witnessed at Super Nintendo World.
