After the reveal of Minecraft Steve as the newest fighter to join Super Smash Bros Ultimate, thousands of viewers flooded Twitter’s servers to tweet their reactions allegedly causing the social media platform to crash. While it can’t be confirmed whether to not Minecraft Steve was the cause of the crash, the timing at which Twitter crashed makes it seem as if today’s Super Smash Bros DLC reveal was the culprit.

So far, Minecraft Steve is the second character to be revealed for the Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC Fighters Pass Vol. 2, and his move set is of the likes Smash fans have never seen before. Super Smash Bros Director Masahiro Sakurai even stated that Steve was incredibly difficult to develop for the crossover fighting game and that he didn’t think he would ever see the day that Minecraft and Super Smash Bros would collide. And it seems that the Smash community didn’t expect this reveal either.

Simultaneous to the reveal of Minecraft Steve, Twitter was down for roughly 15 minutes. While it can’t be determined what actually caused the crash, thousands of Twitter users tweeting about Minecraft Steve and Super Smash Bros were likely the cause. The two events happened at the exact same time, so it’s hard to say there was a different cause for the downtime. After the platform returned to normal, a new flood of tweets started exploiting the hilarity that Minecraft Steve broke Twitter.

Minecraft holds the title for the best-selling video game of all time, so it’s no wonder that so many people were excited for the announcement of Steve. Along with the iconic hero fo Minecraft; Alex, Zombie, and Enderman are also joining the fight. Minecraft content has also seen a resurgence of viewers over the past couple of years with events like Minecraft Championship and Minecraft Manhunt drawing in millions of eyeballs. This spike in popularity may have been what caused Minecraft Steve to finally make his way into Super Smash Bros.

Video games trend on Twitter all of the time, and in the case of games like Fall Guys, it’s every other day. But this is the first time Twitter has seemingly crashed due to the excitement for a video game character reveal. It’s doubtful that the four remaining characters for the Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will cause as much of a stir, but Twitter better brace itself for the potential influx of tweets come time for those reveals.
