A new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mod transforms Sora into his fellow Kingdom Hearts protagonist Roxas. After years of fan polls and speculation, the spikey-haired hero of Disney and Square Enix’s sprawling crossover RPG franchise was announced as the final guest character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate back in October. Sora wasn’t alone either, as though Nintendo was forced to excise any Disney cameos due to copyright reasons, several members of his supporting cast were included as helper Spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Fighters Pass Vol. 2.

Not everyone from Kingdom Hearts got to cameo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate though, with one of the most noteworthy omissions being Roxas. First appearing at the end of 2004’s Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories and serving as the playable character in the opening chapters of Kingdom Hearts II, Roxas was a “Nobody,” a doppelganger created when a person loses their Heart. While Roxas was re-absorbed into Sora to awaken him from his memory restoring cryosleep during the prologue of Kingdom Hearts II, future games like Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days would flesh out Roxas’s background as a member of the villainous Organization XIII and friendship with fellow Nobodies Axel and Xion. Due to how popular of a character Roxas is, fans were slightly disappointed that he wasn’t at least featured as an alternate skin for Sora in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

This is where a modder by the handle of JoeTEStrikesBac steps in, as they recently posted a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mod labeled Roxas (Smash Ultimate Styled) to GameBanana (via The Gamer). As its name suggests, this mod adds Roxas in his Twilight Town costume from Kingdom Hearts II as an alternate character model for Sora, complete with voice clips of Roxas from past Kingdom Hearts games (courtesy of fellow modder Nin10Doug). Currently, the Roxas (Smash Ultimate Styled) mod is listed as being 87% finished, but JoeTEStrikesBac wanted to have a working build available for people to download before the Holidays. As such, there are still a few technical hiccups to be ironed out, and JoeTEStrikesBac plans to add Roxas’s cloak from his time in Organization XIII as an alternate skin later on.

This new Roxas mod is far from the only time that players have added new features to Sora’s stint as a guest fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as previous mods would give him his action figure-like Toy Box form from Kingdom Hearts III and allow him to wield the Shotgun from Team Fortress 2 against the likes of Sephiroth and Kazuya Mishima. These mods will likely be the only new content for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as franchise creator Masahiro Sakurai has indicated that he might be taking a break from the crossover fighting game franchise for the time being – though he hasn’t left out returning for a new installment in the future.

Roxas fits well as a reskin of Sora in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, given that he has pretty much all of the same skills and magical powers due to his status as Sora’s Nobody. Only time will tell if modders decided to work in other Sora-related Keyblade wielders like Ventus or Xion, but for now, playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as Roxas is a fun treat for longtime fans of the Kingdom Hearts series.
