The World of Light mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate involved all of the characters in the game uniting against a common foe, but who was the leader of the assembled heroes and villains? It might seem like Mario or Link would be a natural choice, considering it’s a first-party Nintendo game, but it was another Nintendo character who was tasked with leading the army into battle.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s World of Light mode, which acts as a story mode, or an equivalent to the Subspace Emissary from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In the World of Light, nearly every character has been transformed into a doll by Galeem, which is an eldritch abomination with the power to control the Master/Crazy Hands. The only one to escape from Galeem’s grasp is Kirby, who must go on an adventure into the World of Light, and free the other characters from their imprisonment.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the original World of Light trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the heroes and villains are shown fighting together as they face the onslaught of Galeem and its army. The director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has confirmed that, in fact, one of the characters was actually leading all of the others in the battle against Galeem.

Masahiro Sakurai Chose The Leader Of The Heroes In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai told Famitsu that the commander of the heroes in the World of Light mode is Marth from the Fire Emblem franchise. This was in response to a question about Marth’s comment in the trailer, which talked about needing to defeat ten Master/Crazy Hands each, and how it had achieved memetic status in Japan. Marth is an appropriate choice for the leader of Smash Bros. heroes and villains, considering he was a general and a prince who spent most of his life on the battlefield. The same would apply to most of the Fire Emblem characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but Marth’s status as the original protagonist of the series makes him the natural choice, especially as he’s considered to be the ‘Hero-King’ in legends told in later entries in the series.

It beats mentioning that this statement was made before all of the DLC characters were released. As of the time of writing, Sora from Kingdom Hearts isn’t yet released. With that being said, Marth is still a natural choice for a leader over the other Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC characters. Banjo-Kazooie, Terry, Steve/Alex, Min-Min, and Kazuya generally work on their own; Joker, Hero, Pyra/Mythra, and Sora are used to working in smaller groups; Sephiroth is a genocidal maniac, and Piranha Plant is – well, a plant. Byleth might be the only Smash Bros. DLC character who could match Marth as the leader of the heroes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as they are also a general, but Marth has greater significance to both the history of Nintendo, the Fire Emblem series, and even Super Smash Bros. itself.
