To some audiences, Superbad is a quintessential coming-of-age comedy. Many fans of Superbad think it got a lot of things about being a teenager right. The movie helped popularize stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as the two main protagonists living up their final days of high school.

Superbad showcases several hilarious personalities. Seth and Evan drive the movie as some of its most relatable characters. However, some of the characters in Superbad are more likable than others. Their demeanor and reaction to conflict showcase their affability.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Francis

Audiences meet Joe Lo Truglio’s Francis when he accidentally backs his car into Seth. He responds frantically and pleads with Seth and Evan not to report him to the police. In exchange for their cooperation, he gives them a ride. He doesn’t appear on screen for long but presents his personality in his memorable moments.

Francis is funny, like many of the characters in Superbad. However, he annoys Seth and Evan in his overfamiliarity. Furthermore, he brings them to a party which he tells them they are all welcome at. He reveals himself to be a liar when he is confronted as uninvited by the party’s host. His actions showcase his self-serving nature.

Officer Michaels

When Fogell tries to buy alcohol with a fake ID, he runs into Seth Rogan’s Officer Michaels and Bill Hader’s Officer Slater. He gives a bumbling interview to the store’s clerk after a robbery and doesn’t seem to take her very seriously. However, he and Slater grill Fogell about his ID.

Officer Michaels shows his unlikability in his condescension to the cashier. He also proves to be misogynistic when he comments on Fogell’s ID. Referring to Officer Slater being an organ donor after his wife insisted, he says “it’s just like a woman, even after you’re dead they want to tear your heart out.” However, he seems affable when he tells Fogell “McLovin” is “badass,” and helps him later on in the film.

Officer Slater

Many fans consider Superbad one of Bill Hader’s best movies, thanks to his role as Officer Slater. Slater is similar to Officer Michaels, and the two are almost always shown on screen together. However, he appears to be slightly more villainous than Michaels. When the two walk in on Fogell and Nicola together, aspects of his personality are showcased to audiences.

Slater is angry and shows his rage in an outburst after discovering Fogell left him and Michaels to go to a party. Furthermore, when the cops discover Seth and Evan, he treats them harshly and makes them lie down on the pavement to await arrest. He appears cold and unfeeling, aggressively pulling a gun on two seemingly harmless teenagers.

Seth

Jonah Hill’s Seth is one of the main protagonists in Superbad and as such presents relatable qualities. He is hysterical and tries to pump up Evan’s confidence in pursuing Becca. He is helpful and generous, sharing his “green beer” with many of Jules’ party guests. However, Seth presents unlikable qualities.

He is a bully, both to his best friend Evan and their punching bag Fogell. Furthermore, he isn’t very understanding when he learns he and Evan won’t be attending the same college. However, he is redeemed in his apologies to those he wrongs like Jules and Evan, and his understanding of Evan’s decision by the movie’s end. He shows his selflessness when he rescues Evan from the party and carries him home.

Fogell

Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s Fogell is perhaps the most famous character in Superbad, known more widely by his alter ego McLovin. Some fans say Fogell is the funniest character in Superbad. Fogell is the butt of many of Seth and Evan’s jokes. He is foolish and reveals himself as such when he buys a fake ID with only one name, an act sure to cause suspicion from clerks in his attempt to buy alcohol underage.

Fogell can’t take a hint and is pushed around by his friends. Furthermore, he lies to Nicola saying he is from Hawaii when he takes on his role as McLovin. However, Fogell showcases many affable qualities. He is brave, risking arrest in his attempt to buy alcohol. He’s helpful, being the only one to acquire a fake ID and help stock Jules’ entire party. Also, he is tenacious and makes sure he ends up at Jules’ party despite several obstacles.

Evan

Audiences see Michael Cera’s Evan from the very beginning of Superbad. Many fans say Superbad is perhaps Michael Cera’s best movie. He is the meeker of the main duo and showcases jokes stemming from his awkward behavior. He is less driven than Seth to attend Jules’ party and pursue their crushes but follows through by the end of the film thanks to Seth’s boosts of confidence.

Evan joins in Seth’s bullying of Fogell and is nasty to Seth when they get into a fight. However, he mostly presents likable qualities. He proves to be a gentleman when he and Becca get together. He also doesn’t hold a grudge with Seth after their falling out. He is kind to most people he comes into contact with.

Becca

Martha MacIsaac’s Becca is Evan’s crush. She shows her kindness and understanding with Evan’s uncomfortable moments, like when he accidentally punches her. She is pleasant and is rarely showcased without a smile on her face. However, she presents a different side of herself when she’s drunk at Jules’ party.

Becca lashes out at Evan when she drinks too much. She insults him after he expresses that he’s uncomfortable with them getting intimate in their drunken state. She vomits and yells at him to leave. However, the next morning she apologizes and understands that Evan was doing the right thing and not rejecting her.

Jules

Emma Stone’s Jules is Seth’s crush, and pursuing her is his main drive to bring him and Evan to her party. Jules opens up her parent-free home to what seems like everyone in her and Seth’s school. Audiences see her first working with Seth in home-economics class, and viewers see her again during the party and the following morning.

Jules presents few negative qualities. She is pleasant and often wears a smile. Furthermore, she is generous, hosting an open house party and risking getting in trouble with her parents and police. She is forgiving, accepting Seth’s apology after he drunkenly confesses to her and accidentally gives her a black eye. Fans see why Seth is so smitten by Jules considering her kind behavior.
