Former DC Comics colorist Gabe Eltaeb is claiming that he quit working with the company after they changed Superman’s motto from “Truth, Justice and the American Way,” to “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.” Eltaeb, who was working as the colorist for Superman: The Son of Kal-El, said in a recent YouTube podcast that he was “tired of [DC Comics] ruining these characters,” in reference to his perception of wokeness at the publisher. Eltaeb claims he quit, but others have suggested he was fired.

Eltaeb had been working on Tom Taylor and John Timms’ Superman: Son of Kal-El. He was (it’s unclear if he still is) supposed to be the colorist for the upcoming fifth issue, where current Superman Jon Kent will come out as bisexual. However, it seems either DC Comics or Eltaeb decided the working relationship wasn’t worth continuing – which was highlighted by a series of comments from the colorist this week.

Over the weekend, Eltaeb (on his now-private Instagram) posted a picture of a project he was working on with the caption, “that time a bunch of ugly liberal SJWs pushed you off of the titanic into a life raft.” Bleeding Cool noted that Eltaeb appeared on a Comicsgate stream, where he unloaded on the publisher. In the podcast, Eltaeb said he was finishing his contract with DC as he’s “tired of them ruining these characters; they don’t have a right to do this.” Additionally, Eltaeb said that mainstream media doesn’t have anything that states, “leftism is bad, and conservatism is good, find it for me, they f-cking won’t they’re not letting people have a voice, they’re the f-cking bigots.

Eltaeb won’t be working on any future DC Comics projects following the comments. He claimed he left after hearing about Superman’s motto being changed from Truth, Justice and the American Way,” to “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.” On the podcast, Eltaeb said “My Grandpa almost died in World War II; we don’t have a right to destroy shit that people died for to give us. It’s a bunch of f***ing nonsense.” On his YouTube page, Eltaeb wrote “I could not stand by and watch them insult the heritage that was paid for in blood.”

While media outlets like Fox News have suggested he quit over “wokeness,” several prominent voices in the comics community have suggested he was fired for making disparaging comments towards DC Comics and its IP. Kurt Busiek made reference to the situation on Twitter, saying “a certain colorist” was fired for trashing his publisher on the podcast.

The current Superman: Son of Kal-El title is one of the best comics currently on the shelves. It’s fun, action-packed, and has a lot to say about current issues facing readers. It’s unclear who will color Superman: The Son of Kal-El next, but it certainly won’t be Gabe Eltaeb. Trashing DC Comics and making questionable comments about the state of the industry is a surefire way to get canned. Whether he quit the Superman title or actually was let go, there was no way DC Comics could continue working with Eltaeb after the remarks.
