There have been rumors that DC Comics could be preparing to replace Kal-El and the original Superman as some sort of corporate retooling of the hero. Fortunately, those rumors are just that, as Superman writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson recently took to Twitter to say those reports and worries are unfounded. Johnson said that while he can’t spoil his upcoming stories about the Man of Steel’s trip to Warworld, he did mention “Superman is forever” and that he won’t “betray the readers.”

So, why do some people believe DC Comics would ever replace their most popular and important superhero? Well, it appears some people are taking recent developments in Superman’s stories as a hint he’s about to disappear. Superman has left Earth in the current continuity and is heading to Warworld to save a group of enslaved refugees from the villainous Mongul. While DC has teased a potential new Death of Superman, there’s no reason to believe that means he’s going away or losing his title in the future.

Some readers may be concerned that with Jon Kent becoming the new Superman of Earth, DC might be setting up the hero to replace his dad in the role. But, if comics have proven anything, it’s that multiple versions of a hero can exist in the same timeline and stories – and still, keep continuity locked in. Marvel is currently running two Daredevils at the moment, while they just completed a miniseries that featured over five Captain America’s at once. Johnson, who’s writing Action Comics for DC Comics, explained that he has heard speculation about Clark being replaced as Superman. He said that he loves the character as much as readers and that he promised he wouldn’t betray them.

Honestly, it would make absolutely no sense for DC Comics to abandon Clark Kent as Superman. When they promised to kill off Superman in the original Death of Superman arc in the ’90s, he was soon brought back despite assurances it was his last story. DC hasn’t made those assurances now, not that they would hold any weight. Throwing away their oldest and most popular hero would be one of the single most boneheaded moves DC Comics could ever make.

Superman might end up dying in the upcoming Warworld Saga. But, comic book readers should know that death in comics is temporary. DC isn’t replacing Clark Kent’s Superman, nor are they putting his own stories to a halt. Fans of Superman who fear as much just need to trust the process and let Johnson tell his story. Superman, like he’s been for more than 80 years, is here to stay. Kennedy, Daniel Sampere, Adriano Lucas, and Dave Sharpe’s Warworld Saga is currently underway in Action Comics #1016 by DC Comics.
