Caution: Spoilers Ahead for Superman & Lois season 2.

Superman & Lois pulled a big twist by revealing the villain of season 2 as Bizarro, but this was hinted at in the season premiere. Continuing from where season 1 left off, Superman & Lois season 2 made major teases of the arrival of Doomsday. All of it began with an unseen presence in the mines of Metropolis causing tremors, as it punched its way to the planet’s surface.

Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) also began experiencing headache-inducing visions connected to the mysterious underground force. When the powerful antagonist finally emerged, it was completely encased in a green suit identical to that of Doomsday’s in the comics. However, just as it seemed Doomsday had been confirmed, a tear in the mask revealed Kal-El’s own distorted face behind it. The episode concluded with the full reveal of the villain as Bizarro rather than Doomsday, but despite the teases of the Kryptonian beast, one quietly pointed in the direction of Bizarro all along.

In season 2’s premiere episode “What Lies Beneath”, Superman finds himself at odds with Lieutenant General Mitch Anderson (Ian Bohen), who wants him to serve U.S. interests before the rest of the world. At the end of the episode, Superman learns that Anderson has assembled a team of metahumans to fill that role. Not only that, but Anderson’s team wear uniforms bearing Superman’s S-shield. This was a subtle but early hint to the arrival of Bizarro.

Ahead of season 2’s debut, Superman & Lois indicated that the theme of the season would be about Superman’s essence. Specifically, the dichotomy of what he tries to represent to the world, and how that doesn’t always align with humanity’s perception of him. Superman’s ideological conflict with Anderson is a major part of that, with the Man of Steel asserting that he fights for the whole world over any one nation. Anderson leading his own unit of metahumans laid the foundation for this, with Superman taken aback at the appropriation of his emblem.

This also set up Bizarro’s arrival by showing that the crest of the House of El would be used by people without Superman’s perspective on justice. Essentially, the idea of his S-shield being flipped is what Superman takes exception to in Anderson’s plan. Bizarro literally bears a flipped S-shield on his chest and is a villain with Superman’s likeness, which pays off the tease from season 2’s premiere.

The show’s take on Bizarro looks much darker and more furious than past versions. With a ragged cape and zombie-esque appearance, Bizarro seems set to be a very formidable villain in his impending battle with Superman. Bizarro’s arrival took many by surprise with the consistent hints of Doomsday. Nonetheless, the show tipped its hat in the season 2 premiere that the importance of Superman’s S-shield would be essential to the story. Superman & Lois season 2 is following through on that with a villain who wears a backward version of the very shield.
