On Friday, it was revealed Superman is getting a brand-new catchphrase, as the iconic DC Comics hero will fight for  “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.” At DC FanDome, DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee revealed the Man of Steel will officially be dropping the “American Way” from his motto and instead, which will be replaced by the phrase “a Better Tomorrow.” The new catchphrase better embodies the hero’s ultimate mission of making the world a better place.

Superman is one of the most recognizable pop culture figures on the planet, as he originally debuted in Action Comics #1 in 1938. The hero has always been connected to the United States, as The Man of Tomorrow crash-landed on Earth and ended up being raised in Smallville, Kansas in the United States. His catchphrase for decades was “Truth, Justice and the American Way.”However, despite his longtime motto suggesting he fights for the American Way, Superman has long fought for everyone across the globe – meaning his motto hasn’t been all-encompassing as it should be. Now, Superman is officially losing “The American Way” from his iconic catchphrase.

The Hollywood Reporter shared the news about Superman’s motto change, revealed at DC FanDome. Lee said that the Man of Steel’s motto is evolving and that he will now use “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow,” instead of his longtime catchphrase “Truth, Justice and the American Way.” Lee said the Man of Tomorrow’s new mission statement will help the hero continue to inspire “optimism and hope.”

To better reflect the storylines that we are telling across DC and to honor Superman’s incredible legacy of over 80 years of building a better world, Superman’s motto is evolving, announced DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee at the company’s DC FanDome fan event on Saturday. Superman has long been a symbol of hope who inspires people, and it is that optimism and hope that powers him forward with this new mission statement.

This isn’t the first time DC Comics made a change to Superman’s catchphrase. In the Batman/Superman series by Gene Luen Yang, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, and Saida Temofonte, Kal-El used the catchphrase “Truth, Tolerance and Justice.” When his son, Jon Kent became Superman, he said in Superman: Son of Kal-El by Tom Taylor, John Timms, Gabe Eltaeb, and Dave Sharpe, that the symbol on his chest stood for “Truth. Justice. And a Better World.”

DC Comics seems to echoing those two catchphrases and making his new one official. It’s great to see Superman get a new motto, as his old one, while fitting, needed an update to make it more all-encompassing. Superman will continue his fight for “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.”
