Warning: Spoilers for Batman/Superman: Authority Special #1!

In DC Comics, there exists a colossal Omniverse that contains every multiverse, reality, and dimension that make up the DC Universe, and now Superman, Batman, and Big Blue’s team of misfits dubbed The Authority has given fans an interesting and important detail about their homeworld of Earth-0. The Infinite Frontier initiative may have opened the door for every story across DC’s vast catalog of comics to matter, but there will always be one “main” universe, and this issue proves it!

Revealed during the events of Batman/Superman: Authority Special #1, by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Trevor Hairsine, Jonathan Glapion, Scott Hanna, Rain Beredo, and Ben Templesmith, Superman and his ragtag team of heroes and anti-heroes called The Authority have one last mission before blasting off to Warworld to fulfill their future destinies. Adding Batman into the mix, it’s relayed to the team that the Dark Multiverse is back at it again trying to invade Earth-0 and that Superman and The Authority are the only ones who can help beat this new incursion back.

Essentially doing a favor for Batman and in turn the entirety of Earth-0, Superman needs to initially convince his team to take Bats’ proposition of traveling deep into the Dark Multiverse to stop this new incursion seriously. And as The Dark Knight gives the team important intel about an Empire of Shadows aka the Dark Multiverse’s version of Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Shadows that has captured one of his contacts — Tempus Fuginaut, the guardian between realms — and are planning on using him to breach universes, Batman and Superman reveal a detail of their Earth that makes it so special in the grand scheme of the Omniverse.

Saying that the Empire is no longer “limiting their scope to their own world,” Batman says that this villainous group has “discovered the universe that serves as a focal point for all the others. This one,” effectively telling fans that the Omniverse’s Earth-0 is far more important than just being the “main” Earth in continuity. Further clarified a few pages later when members of the Empire of Shadows muse over the tortured body of Fuginaut, they speak of how Earth-0 is the “nexus” of the Omniverse, and that it is the “world from which all other worlds spring,” giving Earth-0 weight as a place that is more integral and essential than any other in the entirety of DC Comics.

Still not contradicting the fact that “everything matters” in this new Infinite Frontier landscape, Earth-0 officially being declared the “main” reality — not just the one that fans follow in continuity, or simply the reality that survived after the last Crisis — is a vital detail of this new Omniverse that only Superman and his pals could have confirmed. Furthermore, it seems that Earth-0 is not only the world where future Dark Multiverse incursions will focus their evil, but the recently gathered multiversal team called the Totality’s mission of protecting the multiverse becomes that much more important as they aren’t just monitoring the Omniverse as a whole, but are protecting the literal focal point of the entire Infinite Frontier era of DC Comics.

So while Superman, Batman, and The Authority successfully infiltrate the Empire of Shadows’ citadel and stop their incursion (for now), the reveal of Earth-0’s true importance is the real takeaway from this issue. Superman and his team have just given fans something to think about, but only time will tell what other details have yet to be uncovered about DC’s sprawling Omniverse.
