Superman will soon be going up against Lobo, DC’s infamous bounty hunter, in an upcoming miniseries titled Superman vs. Lobo. The Kryptonian might be one of the few beings in the universe who is a qualified match for a fight with the main man.

Throughout Lobo’s history in the DC Universe, his relationship with Superman has been a fan favorite dynamic. Since they’re essentially the opposite of each other in every regard, their pairing has made for fun adventures over the years. With Kal-El’s Boy Scout-like sensibilities and Lobo’s disregard for basic decency, the two of them complement each other in surprising ways. However, Lobo and Superman have seldom shared the same panel recently, causing many fans to miss their occasional partnership. Thankfully, readers won’t have to wait much longer for the next time they cross paths.

Soon, the Man of Steel and the main man will share a title in a three-issue miniseries Superman vs. Lobo, written by Tim Seeley (Batman: Eternal, Grayson) and Sarah Beattie (Saturday Night Live) with art by Mirka Andolfo (Bombshells, Punchline). The first issue will release as an oversized installment on August 24, published through DC Black Label, which is intended for audiences aged 17 and older. The miniseries will premiere as a part of DC’s Prestige Plus format (8 1/2″ x 10 7/8″) featuring a series of card stock variant covers, illustrated by Andolfo, former Lobo artist Simon Bisley, and Tony Harris (Ex Machina, Starman). There will also be a 1:25 card stock variant illustrated by Phillip Tan (Batman & Robin: Batman Reborn). DC Comics has given a brief synopsis for the miniseries:

“Numen is the most popular being in the universe, a god clogging all social channels—and he does not take kindly to attention going to Superman and Lobo. Further complicating things is Dr. Flik, a scientist determined to study the last sons of Krypton and Czarnia respectively. What can she glean from the hero whose home planet was destroyed when he was just a baby and the bad, bad boy who made it all go away just for the heck of it?”

The writing duo of Seeley and Beattie previously worked together on indie comic hit, Money Shot which released last year. Given Beatie’s experience on SNL combined with the details that DC has released for Superman vs. Lobo, this is shaping up to be an action-heavy comedic tale. Since it’s set outside of mainstream continuity, the creative team has plenty of freedom to reinvent the DC Universe, especially factoring in that this is coming from DC Black Label. The 17+ label indicates that fans can expect uncensored language and possibly some over-the-top violence, which only feel authentic to a story featuring Lobo.

As the title seems to imply, the two titans will be clashing, which makes it appear that this is likely their first meeting. It’s practically a superhero custom for there to be a fight before any team-ups can happen. With Lobo’s absence in Superman stories in recent years, Seeley and Beattie have a unique opportunity to breathe new life into the character. Despite it being a storyline limited to three issues, it’s likely this will be a take that Superman and Lobo fans haven’t seen before.
